Hi Andy, I'm sorry you're going through so much; I hope that you've turned the corner and all will be getting much better for you.
Reading your post I'm wondering if TMJ may be at work here; mind you, I'm no Dr., but you have had a lot of stress and tension, and it is not unusual to clench your teeth while sleeping. Enough of this action will cause the muscles around the temporal mandibular joint specifically (hence TMJ) to spasm and start getting out of sync. I mention this because of the popping and cracking noise you're hearing. This will cause some severe pain, make no mistake about it!, and left untreated could cause problems down the road.
Saying all of this, it would be worth of trip to your Dentist; let them know about the problems you're having and have them check you out. I hope that you find the answer...this is a good place to start...
