Hello-I am new here-but I have been a migraine sufferer since I was 8 years old. You're post caught my eye when I was getting off another forum. I used to also be an avid exerciser, and that sometimes brought them on just as you explained.
I have tried several medications. Imitrex and Relpax are non-narcotics that have helped me tremendously. These have to be taken once you feel the migraine coming on or after its started. They aren't for preventing migraine, unfortunately.
Ofcourse narcotic prescriptions can help-fiorcet, hydrocodone, percocet, etc. But I say that with caution-because if used on a regular basis they can cause rebound headache, not to mention they can be addictive and habit-forming. But they are extremely relieving if the imitrex, etc, does not work. I always always try a non-narcotic option first.
Another drug I have heard about is an old drug called "Topamax" (sp?) I personally have not tried this-I have an aunt who takes this every day as a preventative. She says it works for her.
Excedrin migraine used to help me a lot, but I think they took that off the shelves recently. I'm not positive, but I've been meaning to google that.
Other than that I have actually had an anti-depressant prescribed to reduce migraines-apparently low seratonin levels can cause them. Also muscle relaxers-as my headaches sometimes start from muscle ache in shoulder that goes to head.
Not sure if any of this info has helped. Migraines are horrible. I actually have an appointment with a "Headache Center" next month that specializes only in migraine. I too would like more preventative alternatives than just treatment med. Hopefully I will learn more then.
Good luck.
