Many believe there is a significant connection between Migraines and IBS, as well as some other conditions like fibromyalgia. They consider it "visceral hypersensitivity" and often the occur together. Some treatments used for one can help the others, including magnesium, SSRIs, etc. Migraines also greatly effect bowel activity/movement.
Applying common prevention strategies for both, including daily exercise, weight control, proper sleep (and treating sleep apnea if present), relaxation techniques, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and staying well hydrated can all help. Many would discourage the use of a narcotic for migraines as it doesnt hit the root of the attack; there are many great abortive medications available. Narcotics also alter bowel activity so you could be causing problems while treating others.
Check Johns Hopkins IBS website for information as well as MayoClinic for both conditions. Look at Amercian Headache Society patient information site (Achenet.org) for more information.
