Hi Michelle,
I'm 42 years old and have suffered from migraines my entire life, although I wasn't formally diagnosed until my mid-twenties. I never go longer than a week without getting one. I think I've tried just about every migraine med out there, both preventative and abortive. The problems with the preventative meds is that they either haven't worked at all, or they worked for awhile and then my body seemed to build up a tolerance to them. I also tend to be very sensative to the side effects associated with these drugs, especially anti-seizure meds. I've tried all the triptans out there for the pain, but they alway make the migraine worse for some reason. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else has had this experience with them. The only thing that works for me is narcotics ( I currently take Percocet, 20 mgs of Oxycontin, and Demerol, never at the same time of course). I'm aware of how careful you have to be taking these drugs, because of both the rebound headache effect, and also the risk for dependency. Unfortunately they're the only things that work. For preventatives I take 50 mgs of Elavil and 20 mgs of Singulair. I am fortunate in that I've got a wonderful support system from my friends, co-workers and my husband. They all realize how painful my migraines get. One site that I've found incredibly informative over the years is MAGNUM (www.migraines.org). They have all the latest medical news, trial info, etc... Good Luck.
Kim
