Hey Everyone

This is off topic, but u all know we get scared and worried and just need to tell others. My middle girl, Sally, has been dealing with asthma lately (dx'd about a month ago) and new meds for that. She also started complaining with achiness in her arms, legs, ribs and neck. Today her doc called me to say he was referring her (after some blood work results came back) to a rheumatologist!! OHMYGOSH. She's only 9 (tomorrow!) and how does a child get that?? Is it inherited?? She's so young...what does she face if this is in fact that?? Yes, i'm doing some research...well TONS of research. I haven't told my husband yet because he's at work and it'd upset him. And, afterall, so far it's not for sure that. I'll talk to him tonight. I guess this is out of left field and scares me for her. If anyone knows anything about this in childhood, please let me know what u know. As i said, it may not be that, but i'm a research bug and i want to know all i can before we have to face that possibility. Thanks so much to u all.

I may be stupid, or its the MS.....but I am not sure if you are asking about the asthma or something else? My son had to go to an allergist for his sports induced asthma, not a rheumatologist. So I am sorry if I misunderstood.

Did they tell you what labs came back and what levels they were?  Maybe they think arthritis?  She (and you) will be in my prayers.  Take care and let us know what you find out.  Hugs!

I'm sorry. I wasn't too clear. :( I'm talking about the referral to the rheumatologist. We feel comfortable about the asthma...at least i think we should feel comfortable about that, tho at this moment i'm rethinking that!...and only just today got the news that something else is going on and maybe she's looking at arthritis (as well/instead of?). I know this is prob nothing to be so upset about, but it's my little girl and it's nothing to sneeze at when u'r 9. Thanks for asking and u'r concern. How is u'r son doing with his ashtma?? Sally takes advair twice daily and singulair which seems to be helping.

They did tell me what labs and levels...but u know what i'm about to say...i can't remember. I'll call and find out! They told me two days ago that her something alkaline levels were high, but weren't worried because they think she's just growing too fast, something that seems pretty common in this family, but now this. I'm wondering if it's high due to possible arthritis or maybe the level that makes them think it's possibly arthritis is high due to her growing fast? Confusing! Thanks for u'r prayers. I'll update when i know more.

Hi Rhonda,

My heart goes out to you and your little girl. I know how trying it can be to worry about your children. None of my kids have asthma but I've had it since I was very young. Nowadays I just use an inhaler once in a while, seems as I got older I don't have as many problems with it. I hope that is the same with your daughter. Let us know if you find out anything about the labs and the rheumy visit. Sending lots of happy thoughts your way.

Are you thinking perhaps that your child has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis?  That does occur in children, usually under the age of 16, and so your daughter would be within that age range.

Here is a website that talks about what it is..and there is some hope here, as some kids apparently outgrow it.  You should note that it is an autoimmune disease.

Hey Everyone

Just wanted to come back and update on what the nurse told me pertaining to what test was abnormal. She said her ana levels were 'speckled' and he wanted her to see a specialist. No word on the appt yet except that i'll have to travel to the same hosp i've been going to for my other neuro. (2 hour drive!) I asked if it was possible that the other test (alkaline something) was giving an abnormal reading due to same possible prob that was causing this test to be abnormal. In other words could this all be just that she's growing too fast. Of course she couldn't answer that. I got the pocket version of 'i can't tell u that'. Uppity, thanks for u'r help. I went to that site and read up on it all. It's encouraging to know it can be outgrown. Funny, that's autoimmune. I have psoriasis which is autoimmune...and here i am looking at possible ms...which is autoimmune. Seems to be some kind of connection?? Pretty interesting to say the least. Thanks again everyone.

As if you don't have enough to cope with now your daughter is experiencing problems.
I'm not 100% sure but I believe that arthritis can be inherited along with asthma, allergy, and most if not all autoimmune inflammatory diseases. It has to be more than a coincidence. If they do find something at least you will know what it is and then you can try to get her the best person to treat her condition.

I was sent to a rheumatologist as I had swelling around my finger joints, this was many years ago now. My knuckles are fine but the next joint on all my fingers have swelling making one side of the joint stick up and they look uneven. The rheumatologist said what was causing it was insufficient drainage of the synovial fluid which keeps the joints moving. (Joints have two valves 1 in 1 out so 1 of my valves in affected fingers is stuffed!
It isn't in my bones and I don't have arthritis. Very difficult to try and put rings on your fingers, it does look awful but I don't let it bother me too much. Sometimes it is a bit embarressing as people sort of stare at them if I am writing.

The rheumi told me that years ago the only way they could fix them was to hit them with a hammer. This enabled the fluid to escape.
I high-tailed it out of his office real quick smart. The only thing that can be done is an operation on them or lots of injections into the joints with cortisone. NO THANKS!!! I'll just put up with it, they are not painful just UGLY!

I want you to know that you and your daughter are in my thoughts. I have a quiet spot in my home where I sit and try to find some peace and reassurance. I was fortunate enough to be in a position to buy my own buddah a few years back at a bargain price. I just love it and he has his own table along with some Tibetan artifacts (prayer beads. singing bowl, mani wheel (prayer wheel) which I purchased in Kathmandu Nepal. He is made of bronze and boy does he weigh a ton! As I am trying to be a buddhist, (well supposed to when I remember) I will light some candles and some incense for you and your daughter and send lots of happy energy and love your way.

Autoimmune diseases are not directly inherited, but there does seem to be evidence that sometimes they can "run" in families. While no one in my family but me has MS, I did have an aunt with lupus, and another with adult rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is NOT in your bones (that's oesteoarthritis), but is indeed an inflammatory joint disease, and is autoimmune.

Hey Everyone

Thanks so much for u'r replies and support. No matter the method of support, i know the intent and sincerity of it and I thank u for it. Hopefully there will be nothing to this in the end, but as Life pointed out, when u'r child hurts u hurt. My oldest daughter is 5'6" and i'm only 5'1 1/2"...she's only 12 and far from finished growing. In other words they seem to grow fast. I went thru something like this with her in that she started to have pains of unknown origin, but after testing nothing was shown to be amiss and we just found out she was growing too fast for her bones to keep up. I was sure that was the case here as well until the doc's found these test results to be abnormal and referred her to the rheumatologist. THAT scares me. I realize in the overall big pic of life this could be so little and nothing to be so upset about, but to me it's not. I"m thankful that even tho this is off topic i can come and tell u all about it and u'r all here for me. THANK U!!

Hi Rhonda,

I have a question. Did your daughter begin having the pain before or after beginning on the asthma medication? I don't know anything about what type of med she's taking but wonder if perhaps she is having a reaction to it?

My son became achy all over after beginning on singulair and after a week of being on it without any change in the achiness, his doctor removed him from it. Years later, he no longer takes any asthma med on a regular basis...just keeps an inhaler on hand in case of emergency. At 18, he now uses diet and regular exercise to help control his symptoms.

In any event, I will of course pray for your daughter. No one should suffer like that but it hurts my heart especially when I hear of a child suffering.
