Do these type of problems ever get better or is always stay the same or get worse?

It's hard to think I will never get my short-term memory back again as well as my learning abilities..

I have to read the same thing over again five times to grasp it.. Then I'll forget it in records time..

I'm also so hypersensitive to sound....

Wow...been here done this! Sorry u'r experiencing all this, but as far as i can tell u it's all very possibly related to or due to ms. I have had many probs with memory over time. I can tell u that for me it gets better and then worse off and on. Comes and goes at will...and usually that's when i see a worsening of other symptoms as well. That's how it is with me...usually see two or three symptoms pop back up at one time. When the memory thing happens it's a mess! I can't remember literally from one min to the next. The comprehension is a big prob too...done that reading thing many times...just can't focus and remember what i've read. Also, the sensitivity to sound is a big one for me! It's not a constant, but it's pretty close to constant. I just hate and can't stand lots of noise now. It's the chaos it creates i think...makes me a nervous wreck. Don't think u'r alone...i imagine many will be along to post to this...it's more common than u'll think!

There are lots of disorders that can affect cognitive ability, and cause memory problems.  MS is one of them, but there are others.  Certainly tell your doctor about this, as all these clues may help him focus his attention on what is ailing you.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's very difficult for me right now since I just started a new job and have to learn so much. Hope it gets better..

Hi Eleanor,

I too have these issues. I find it really frustrating too! My academic ability has always been my strength.....and I'm scared that I'm losing the one thing that I'm good at!!!!

I really hope you get some answers soon!

I hear ya...The weakness is bad, but losing my mental ability is very scary and sad..

Aside from muscle ailments/stregnth/fatigue, the decrease in cognitive functions has been one of my biggest problems. I used to be able to carry conversations and join in, but now I sit on the sidelines. I forget words in mid-sentence and it makes me feel like I sound uneducated or stupid. I prefer to do my communicating via email as it gives me time to think. LOL I sometimes have a "foggy brain" as I call it which makes it even more difficult to get through the day. That comes and goes but I have to say that some days, I do feel better in the smarts area than other days. I've tried to see if there were any patterns or things that I had done differently to initiate the change in the cognitive areas, but haven't figured it out yet.

Lots of us have UNlearn "multitasking" I find it helps if I concentrate on one task at a time, finish that, then start another. I'm easily distracted, and can find myself at the end of the day with nothing done, if I haven't done this.
