hello. i read another post that someone had to have a catheter put in because they can not empty their bladder.

so i was just thinking i am guessing that it is normal to MS to not be able to go potty? (sorry i have 4 young boys thats just the word.) lately i have not been going for most of the day. I drink alot but just dont go. my boyfriend gets worried about it but im not really should i be?

and yet other times i leak, (i guess you would say) throughout the day. is this part of it too?

reading the stories of other people helps to understand things and even though i dont have the DX yet and still the symptoms and it is in my MRI's it still helps me and i wish i could help other people i just do not know how.

i feel like i am going down hill again and yet i do not know.

just confused i guess.

Hey Angel,

You might google "neurogenic bladder".  That pretty much describes what many of us go through.  I have the issue where you are sure you have to go but you can't "let down".  The biggest problem is that when urine is left in your bladder for so long, it can grow bacteria.  This, of course leads to a urinary tract infection.  Any time you have an infection with MS (I know you aren't diagnosed yet) you could trigger an immune response that may start an inflammatory flare.  It behooves MSers to avoid infections at all costs!  They are bad news. 

I don't have the leakage problem but I expect it may happen in the future.  Good luck!  You may want to get a few of those kits from the drug store (over the counter) that indicate whether or not you have an infection.  If you think you can see one, try to visit a neuro - urologist.  Yes, they exist and tend to be an MSers good buddy!!!

PS.  I loved "potty".  I have two big boys....been there, done that.

Blah!  Clearly I have MS brain too! Ok so learning how to self cath is suppose to be very helpful.  I have not had to do this but it could be in the future for me.  For now, I am managing by taking cranberry extract (as per my GP).  This acidifies my urine and keeps bacteria from growing in it so I don't get constant UTIs.  OK I hope this is something you can actually use.

Hi Gretchen again,

i do know about neurogenic bladder my 5 year old has that because he was born with spina bifida. we have to straight cath him 5 times a day i just did not know if it was associated with MS. I used to get uti's all the time i havent had one in about a year or more but i am afraid that i might get one with the way i have been going to the bathroom. I went 11 hours yesterday i think it was without going. I felt it was full but couldn't go. I see the new neurologist on friday and i am hoping that will get me somewhere.

Ah yes then you are experienced with neurogenic bladder.  I hope your little guy is doing well with all he has to manage.  I hope you get some answers Friday!  Remember, you need a reasonable explanation for lesions and symptoms.  Please let me know!
