For a MS diagnoses do you need MRI of both spine & brain?

Hello all,

I have had MS/lupus/fibromyalgia type symptoms for 12+ years now.

I had an MRI done of my brain 10 years ago in addition to the lumbar puncture, EMG, ENG and EEG.  All of those tests came out negative.

I am following up with a new nuerologist on Friday.  I am wondering why my previous Nuerologist didn't do a MRI of my spine since the spine can show lessions as well?

Would anyone care to comment on this?  I would greatly appreciate it.  Also, can it sometimes take this long to diagnose MS????

When I first was diagnosed, I didn't receive a spinal MRI.  I have heard that spinal lesions are less common.  We do have a member here that only has spinal lesions.  Brain lesions are much more common.  My doctor only did a spinal MRI after doing a thorough exam and symptom checklist.  That indicated the possibility of a spinal lesion.  I did in fact have one.

I was diagnosed with fibro and cfs..along with a punch of other crap,ana is positive.Just got back from a pain specialist and shes ordered ALOT of tests-total mri,bloodwork,ultrasound on my thyriod(hypothyroidism),thats just the start.Finally gunna get some answers.,,cuz I did have lesions show on other mri.But I was just wondering,cant remember if it was here that I heard it...but they used to help diagnose ms by people having a hot bath-as it brings out er something.Well ,,,ya know everytime I take a hot bath(and I lovem by the way)I cant hardly move for hours.Thoughgt it was my imagination but ya,,weird.Any takes?Sorry about past message spellings by the way..Im really a very good speller but my fingers seem to go faster than my brain. :eyes

Hi Susan,

I just wanted to wish you success in finding the cause of your symptoms. How did your appointment go today? It can unfortunately take a while for diagnosis in some cases. My husband was diagnosed in 2001 and that was after about a decade of symptoms.

The hot water bath test was used until about 30 years ago. It originally was used to bring out blindness associated with optic neuritis and later they found out any symptom could be brought on by the heat. Its called the Uhthoff phenomenon for those interested. Good luck with your testing also! (p.s. no apologies necessary for spelling, sharing is far more important)
