Can MS go into remission without treatment?

Is it possible for a flare to go into remission without treatment????

Yes.  It happens all the time.  The only treatments out there for an MS flare is very high dose steroids.  (solumedrol; 1,000 mg via IV)

The steroids only help the symptoms.  Steroids don't actually treat the flare.  My neuro was very clear that steroids only help the flare to cool.  By the time you experience the symptoms of a flare, the damage has been done.  It might take some time to see how bad the damage will be, but steroids don't lessen the severity of disability/damage. 

Remember that remission is really only a part of RRMS.  If you are talking about SPMS or PPMS then there may not be a remission and only a steady worsening of symptoms.

Hi Susan;

I know(?) you're not pregnant, but pregnancy is one of the things that can make MS go into remission. yes, it happens all the time - even when you're not pregnant!

I think so but I am not a Dr. I think we all have so many different effects from MS. I have optic neuritis when I was 34, then again around 45 and then this year at 53 the difference this time Is I have more symptoms. I will see Dr. tomorrow about possible medicine to keep it under control I am also exploring alternatives if any one is doing anything that is working in that realm.

Relapsing-Remitting MS often goes into remission by itself.  That is one reason why many people are not diagnosed with their initial symptoms of MS.  I had optic neuritis a couple times and attributed it to stress and I also had numbness in my feet and right arm that came and went away which I attributed to back problems.  Basically I was "too busy" to be ill so I always came up with another explanation even though I have a sister with MS.  It wasn't until I awakened one morning with severe weakness in my right side and couldn't walk that I paid attention and was finally diagnosed.  Many "MS symptoms" can be attributed to other neurological conditions or simply reactions to busy daily living.  It is when we are more than "inconvenienced" that we find the time to be tested and diagnosed.

Diagnosed in 1987 and I am walking again!

Yep. The name "Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis" is based on disease activity that flares up and then subsides, with or without residual damage.

When I was diagnosed (1995) it was in the hospital during a flare so bad that I was basically paralyzed. After four days of IV steroids, I walked out of the hospital with a walker. In less than a year, I was taking stairs two at a time.

I have since then had flare-ups that I rode out without steroids, and they subsided in time. Over the years I have accumulated some disability (probably because it *always* attacks my legs) but it gets worse, then better, then worse again.

The comment was made that the damage is done before the symptoms show up.  For me, the symptoms come, neuro exam shows abnormalities, but MRI of brain comes back normal.   Such frustration.
