I had an MRI on Friday- I was unable to have it with contrast, because as they entered it to me, I got sick. I am evidently allergic to the stuff.... anyway, today I got a phone call from my primary doctor's nurse stating, "the MRI was a normal scan- there is a good bit of white matter on your brain, but it can be from a previous injury or your headaches. The doctor said to get another MRI in 6 to 12 months."

I responded with, "No. Please tell the doctor I can not continue this way! I am exhausted by 2 p.m., I have tingling hands and feet, I can't concentrate, can't speak right, the list goes on, and I fall almost daily now."

Would it be right for me to seek a neuro on my own, if the doctor will not? I am hoping she will get back to me with that in mind. For further info, I had my first episode 9 years ago- three weeks of barely walking at all.

First off, white matter is normal brain tissue. I am assuming you mean white matter lesions or plaques. Lesions or plaques on your white matter can be caused by many things; Lyme disease, MS, HIV, infection, migraines and so on. It is not normal.

You absolutely should get a 2nd opinion. Please see a neurologist and preferably an MS specialist. You can get a list of MS specialists in your area by calling the local chapter of the MS Society.

Contrast only shows active lesions. It is helpful for diagnosis but not necessary. The contrast agent (gadolidium) is quite toxic. It's best to avoid it.

Thanks for your response. Am I right that it's quite possible to still have MS even with a clean MRI? I can't continue falling daily, not talking straight, wanting to throw up every time I've been in the heat, the list goes on. I am miserable.

I was given several blood tests, and Lyme, B12, etc. was ruled out- the mimics to MS.

I am really wanting to get to a Neuro.

Well some feel it's possible to have MS without lesions showing on an MRI, however you will rarely find a doctor who will diagnose you with MS. "multiple sclerosis" means multiple scars. It means lesions.

You do need to see a neurologist. There are several tests that help diagnose MS. MRI, lumbar puncture, evoked potentials, and a neurological exam (looking for irregular reflex responses). You need to have no other reasons that could explain your symptoms.

Thanks for your reply. I am nervous about the lumbar puncture- had a spinal tap years ago that about did me in- I still have pain in the entry spot from time to time. What is "evoked potentials"? Thanks!

A lumbar puncture and a spinal tap are the same. They are better about those now. They can do fluoroscopy to see where to go. Evoked potentials tests the function of your central nervous system. They put electrodes on your scalp and then check your eyes, ears and extremeties.

You can opt to not have the lumbar puncture. Many people are diagnosed on just a neurological exam and a positive MRI. Perhaps the neurological exam and evoked potentials will give you answers.
