Vision

 

I have had optic neuritis in the past, pretty severe but thankfully, the vision has returned mostly back to normal. I say mostly because of a couple of recent events.

In the past week or so, there have been a couple of occasions where items appeared to be vibrating. It wasn't everything vibrating in my line of sight and always at a distance of about 10 feet away or so.  Has anyone had this happen to them?   Could it be a precursor to something else or just a fluke thing?

I've dealt with nystagmus for almost 3 years now and it sounds like you may be experiencing it too. Typically, there are some positions of the eye where everything is normal. In my case, my vision is normal when I move my eyes all the way to the top or all the way down. My eyes vibrate uncontrollably when I look straight ahead. I believe this symptom is usually temporary for most MS patients but sometimes it can linger. Unfortunately, there is no way to fix it as of yet--but I'm keeping my fingers crossed : ).

For me, nystagmus occurs when I am tired or over heated. It can also happens when I am reading. I read on a kindle so I can increase the font size. If I'm reading non-electronic text, then I use a magnifying strip with a highlighted line. That helps me to track the text without losing my place.

Sometimes my neurologist can see it other times my eyes seem to track smoothly. It's weird. Nerve pain and nystagmus are my only symptoms that come and go. All my other symtoms are permanent residual symptoms.

hmmm, at my last appointment, the resident mentioned something about my eyes tracking abnormally and then when the doc came in and checked, he didn't see it. I'll bring it up when I go again.

Thanks for the encouragement. I hope I'm not about to flare. I would assume that if I were going to flare, I would know in a couple of days, right?

My permanent (thus far) symptoms are the electrical shock type feelings in my right arm, as well as numbness, some facial numbness, and of course, the lovely muscle spasms. However, I'm getting used to all of them. The fatigue seems to come in waves... here a few days, then gone, then back again for a few days. I'm trying to keep stress to the minimum, as there does seem to be a correlation, for me anyway.

I have 3 more 22mcg injections of the rebif to go before I'm on the maintenance dose of 44mcg. They say that if I'm going to react, it will be when I step up to the 44mcg. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for no reactions.

Well, I think I did have a flare. Not a terrible one but my balance has been more compromised than normal along with the vision issues. I'm working on it all, so don't worry.

My facial numbness is worse but tolerable. Left leg is now numb wasn't before and it feels like someone is squeezing it around my thigh.

I should mention that I've always had an issue with pain, I don't feel it like most people do, which is always a problem for me and doctors to figure out what is wrong. For example, I had torn my ACL and I described the paid as an annoyance, not excrutiating as it should be. Good in some respects, not so good in others.

oh yes, I was certainly in a flare! The exhaustion the past couple of days was almost unbearable but I seem to be on the rebound.

The doc with my knee was shocked that I didn't complain more. When he looked at the MRI, he said it was a football career ending injury and I should have been screaming in pain.. ooops! LOL

I notice that I have a lot of skin level numbness, I just thought it was normal! oh lord help me! :)

I start my final step up tonight! I'm nervous but I'll let you know how it goes.

Oh the knee thing happened years ago, back in 1996 from a work injury. I was tending bar at the time. I had surgery and it is all fixed now :)

A similiar thing occured with my back in 2012. What my primary care doc told me was a spasm, turned out to be 3 hernitated discs. One of which was really bad. The orthopod was amazed that I was walking and not on tons of pain killers. ooops! Surgery took care of that too, for the most part.

On a side note, when I had my LP, the doctor looked at my record and lower back images and she believes that issue with my back was actually partially related to MS. Too bad, I didn't have any other symptoms aside from the neurological ones from the back or I could have been diagnosed earlier.

No issues with last night's injection. So far, so good!

I'll feel better about the Rebif once I have at least a week under belt so to speak, given what happened with me and the Copaxone. All was great until the 6th dose.... what fun that was :)

Oh wow. Yeah. This makes sense. I hope you are feeling better real soon. Good luck with the steroids. Ugh.

It seems way too soon for rebif to be working. It often takes 6 months ore more for a med to be at full strength. I hope your doctor doesn't change you up so soon.

One of my worst flares was 7 months into copaxone. I was terrified it wasn't working. My neurologist told me to relax and remember that there is NO drug that stops MS. While it was not great to be reminded of that, it helped me to step back and give it a little more time.

How are you doing on the full strength rebif? You ARE a warrior. Find yourself a fighting mantra that helps you to keep going. Keep me posted as to how you do on the solumedrol.

Oh wow. Yeah. Another good plan. I can't imagine working while doing the "roids." Rest. That can help reduce inflammation.
