Hi all,
I am becoming more and more confused at work.It scares me cause I work with kids.
Does any one know if I quit work can I draw unemployment for a while???
I feel soooo bad thinking about quitting, but I am so confused at times, where I should go next and who do I pick up from class to go to art and such.
I am afraid I may forget something that could be bad. Not a good 2 weeks for me.
Thanks all Linda
You need to carefully examine any employee benefits books or papers you received upon getting the job. If you just quit -- you can be denied unemployment benefits. If you get some medical advice to stop working, you may be able to collect benefits. Depending on the size of the corporation where you work, you may be eligible for benefits under the Family Medical Leave Act -- but this would be unpaid leave, which may not be an option for you.
And then you'd have to find other work, or try to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurace (SSDI), or SSI (Supplemental Security Income), depending on how long you've worked over your working career, and if you have enough "credits" (40 quarters, or 10 years) paid into Social Security (at which time you'd be eligible to apply for SSDI).
Does your employer know you have multiple sclerosis? You might talk with him/her about "reasonable accommodations" you could put into place to help you keep your job. YOu would need to know what those might be -- keeping a pad and pen with you to make lists of the kids you're to be tending, for example; or your work schedule (where you go next, you described); or whatever other things like that you need to keep track of. Or maybe being assigned some job within the school that doesn't require that kind of attention.
If you haven't already disclosed, (and if the corporation is small), you may not be eligible for "reasonable accommodation", either -- and you could be dismissed from your job, if you're not able to perform satisfactorily, so it's important you make every effort to fix this right now, before you indeed do make some serious error.
Employment issues are always challenging, because each work situation is so different. Good luck to you.
