Good afternoon all   :-)  

I've always had a fairly active gag reflex, dentist trying to hold down my tongue, doctor with the tongue depresser etc.

I'm finding lately though that I'm gagging for no reason.  Just playing fetch with the dog, no nausea nothing other than a gag and then a bunch of almost reflective swallowing.

Sound familar or am I off my rocker or just "getting ready" for the stomach flu? tongue

Hey Barb!

No, u'r not off u'r rocker. This could be related to ms or may not be, but the gag reflex is affected by u'r nervous system too, so it very well may be part of the overall pic of ms. Have u mentioned this to u'r doc yet? I"m sure others will be along soon to give u more insight, but wanted u to know i understan what u'r asking and think it could indeed be an ms thing. If u report this to u'r doc let us know what he says! Good to see u again!

I have developed this spontaneous gagging thing too. I'll be sitting there...just sitting...no food or drink or anything then wham...gag and choking. Usually it happens when I open my mouth to speak, but sometimes it just happens randomly. It's the stupidest thing.

Thank you Rhonda and LittleChina, I'm glad to know I'm not going anymore nuts than I already am.
I'll add this to the list, I see the Neurologist on the 5th, had my MRI yesterday

Hi Barb,

 

    Do make sure you mention it to your neuro next week.  Some people with MS do have problems with that kind of thing.  Choking and swallowing problems can happen too.  It doesn't seem to always happen with food or drink for my husband, usually it's just out the blue and random like littlechina mentioned.  Let us know what your doc says.
