Barbara,
So good to hear from you and know that David is doing much better. If he has been going on long walks and out to a movie, I'd say that is excellent progress. All of us ileos have had to battle keeping hydrated. I really do believe that in time the small intestine learns to absorb some of the fluids to help stay hydrated. I've had mine since 1984 and I will have to say that the only time that I really get into a bad situation with hydration is when I have a bug. Then it becomes a real problem.
Do you know the "pinch" test for hydration??? That's when you pinch the skin, like on the top of your hand, and it holds its position when you are dehydrated. When I took care of my mom when she was going thru chemo and radiation, I was constantly "pinching" her cuz she was so prone to dehydration (even w/o an ostomy). She was always saying "Quit pinching me!", but she knew what/why I was doing. It was our little joke!!
Keep your chin up and tell David I said "congrats" on his progress.
