Safe Veggies Please?

I just had my ileostomy surgery 3 weeks ago. I was never a big meat eater before. I'd rather fill up on vegetables. Its killing me not to be able to eat them. Are there any safe veggies i CAN eat? Someone please say yes, any kind of veggie.

Yes, you can eat any kind of veggie :) Seriously, after you've healed you probably will be able to eat whatever you want. The vast majority of ostomates can. Introduce new foods, one at a time, and CHEW, CHEW, CHEW! That way, if a food does cause an adverse reaction you can either limit it or eliminate it from your diet, but chances are you won't have to.

Everyone is different as to what they can tolerate so just because one person says 'don't eat such a such a food' or 'this food caused problems for me' DOES NOT mean you won't be able to eat it either, so don't be scared to try whatever your heart desires, despite what others say.

When will the watery output change. I can eat certain foods that cause it to be water.
other times its mostly thicker. i'm having they ostomy closed on feb 8th, and then i will be using this new internal reservoir. i dont want to be running to the bathroom all the time or messing myself.

Yep, certain foods will have different effects on your output. Salads tend to make my output watery but that's fine. Pasta tends to make my output thicker and that's fine too.

In time, it will thicken up for you a bit more (although not much since your takedown is very soon), but an ileostomy output will never be more than a paste-like consistency, and you'll get watery at times too.

Output with your ileo is no indication of what your output will be with a j pouch, so don't worry too much about that one :)

Shaz is absolutely right about trying stuff --- just be careful for first time trials. Eat a small amount, chew very well, and drink liquids with it. You will find what is comfortable for you. Introduce new veggies and fruits one at a time. Very fibery things are harder to digest because of the shortened digestive tract, ie celery, stems of broccoli, etc. Fruits skins, like apple skins, can also be really hard to digest. But, carefully try them and see what you can tolerate.

Thanks for the encouragement. i cant wait to eat them all....
is it also normal for pasta and rice and certain softer foods not to completely digest before entering the pouch..that is just too weird....so many questions about all this.

Things are just really moving thru you quickly right now -- it will slow down and you will have some better digestion/absorption over the next month or two. Yeh, some foods come out just as they go in!

I eat all types of fruits and veggies, both raw and cooked, and have never had any problems, so serve up your favorites and enjoy!! Congrats on being disease free!! :-)
