Well, I haven't posted anything in ages, but I am now getting myself ready for surgery on January 24th. This is the first of the two surgeries, and I will still have the ostomy when I wake up but after a one and a half year delay I am ready to move forward. I am both excited and nervous, and I am sure as the day comes closer the nerves will take over.

Anyway, I will take any kind thoughts, prayers, good vibes, positive energy & advice anyone is willing to send my way. Thanks for your support!

Wow, why did it take so long for your second surgery? My doc said I'd have a period of about 6-8 weeks between my 1st and 2nd surgeries... I hope it stays close to that because (if all goes according to plan) I'll have a good amount of time in order to get ready for fall semester. But GOOD LUCK!

I had my colon removed in March 2006 and had to wait for the pathology report to come back. My surgeon informed me after a couple months that he was happy with the report and he was willing to do the J pouch surgery, and arrangements began. Then in July 2006 I became quite ill, unable to climb stairs without the room spinning, my inhalers didn't help what I thought was my long standing asthma, and I had a great amount of chest pain. The wonderful doctor that I happened to see, not my family doctor, immediately put me on anti-biotics thinking it may be pleurisy - but just on a hunch he also scheduled me an urgent CT Scan. This is not an easy thing in my area, but he insisted and they squeezed me in. I had to travel several hours for the scan and after the tech would not allow me to leave. I had not one but several pulmonary embolisms or blood clots in my right lung.

The strange thing about me getting this that it was four months after surgery which makes it not impossible but very unlikely according to my surgeon, that surgery was the cause. I was on blood thinners for 6 months then taken off only to be retested and find I was making clots again. Six more months and then retested again, this time I was good.

So now after being off the blood thinners since August and consulting with the surgeon a few times, the surgery is again going ahead. He didnt want to touch me on the blood thinners, or while I was making clots as they are very easily fatal - and trust me - painful. Now I go to have the pouch constructed and as you said, 6-8 weeks later the ostomy will be removed.

Just wanted to wish you good luck on your upcoming surgery. So sorry to hear about the problems you had after your last. Mine is Monday, so I understand the nerves, but I have had horrible rectal pain since November and am looking forward to them pitching my rectum into the nearest landfill! I keep telling myself that the surgical pain will get better and I am so much stronger going in for this surgery than I was for the last, that I should be ok. I don't know what I will wake up to either the dreaded loop ileostomy or a functioning j-pouch, but I'm prepared for either and just want to get it over with. It's cold here in Chicago, so I won't be missing out on spending time outdoors, but I know I'm going to go stir crazy in the hospital and when I get home! Let us know how everything goes!

get a hold of your nerves....remember surgery pain, or colon pain.
i was so sick of pills, and doctor bills, and all the pain. I was just ready to get it over with. So i went in not scared at all. just glad to have that diseased thing out of me. I felt bad all the time. Now i feel great. Yes, i hurt from surgery. But mentally and emotionally, i feel wonderful. I had my surgery Dec 21st, and have my take down feb 8th. 7 weeks.
