Hey u guys, I was just wondering how common it is to need a catheter after an ostomy surgery? I had a horrible experience the last time they tried to give me a catheter in the hospital. It hurt so bad I was screaming bloody murder. I finally told them to stop and I'd wait it out. If it is common, please please please tell me that they put it n while ur under...
But only if its tru.

The catheter is inserted while you are in surgery. You won't feel a thing.

What about when they take it out? I hear it hurts the most when taking it out...

I suppose you'd also be on pain meds too when they take it out, so I guess that's not too bad.

Wow I never thought about the catheter, I guess I'm going to request that they put it n during surgery. Ok now I'm freaking myself out again and they still haven't given me the date (by the way Ash, did u read my post about the surgeons office calling this am? I freaked and didn't answer, they didn't leave a msg). I gota calm myself back down. Thanks guys

I had 3 catheter in when I had my C-sections only and they did them after I was numb or asleep. When you have your surgery you will not want to get up and go to the bathroom right after. I was a CNA once and watch the nurses put them in the residents and you need to relax that muscle so it won't hurt. It's all to do with your muscle surrounding so take a deep breathe and relax that will help. Take Care when you have your surgery. I'll be praying for your quick healing.

IMO I certainly would opt for the catheter post surgery cuz you won't feel like getting up every time that you have to go potty during the first few days, for sure. Mine have all been put in after I was "under" .... and removed while awake. Yea, it is uncomfortable for a couple of seconds when they remove it, but worth it for the period of time that you have it. You have suffered much longer with the pain of the disease than the few seconds that it takes to remove the cath.

I loved my catheter. They put it in when I was under so I never felt a thing and it didn't hurt at all when they took it out. I hated having to unplug the cords and lug my IV pole to the bathroom. And they were pumping me with liquids so I was having to go every 30 minutes.

I know u guys are right. As long as they put in in while I'm under I guess I'll deal. Its just that 1 bad episode in a hospital can traumatize u for life. And I guess that's how I feel after the previous experience. I do kno logically u guys are right.

Peggy especialy about the lugging of the iv pole during those dreaded hours btwn 10pm and 6am when the nurses don't answer the call button

Oh yeah, they'll put it in while you're under, and it doesn't hurt for a woman to have it taken out. Now, Matt has heard that it hurts to have it taken out, and that's true for guys.

yeah it will be in, otherwise you would be peeing all over yourself, ick! it really doesn't hurt that bad to have it taken out, i promise! and i woke up with mine in, and it was better than having to get up to go to the bathroom at first, the first day or so you are so drugged and out of it, that getting up to go would be like runnign a marathon!

With an ostomy, a catheter, and meals being delivered to your bedside, it can make you quite the couch potato, so don't forget to walk as much as you can after surgery. That will help get things moving, and a working stoma means you get to go home!! :-)

they put mine in while i was in surgery and took it out when i was awake a couple days or a week later. it didn't hurt at all for me, in fact i was bummed to have to get up so much because i was peeing like crazy from all the drips and tpn they had me on. i longed for that little tube! it won't be a big deal and like someone else brought up, you'll be on pain meds so no biggie at all!

They put mine in while in surgery and i had i for 5 days i didnt like it, even when the nurses looked at it i felt it! lol, but when they took it out it was very easily done and i didnt feel a thing. Good luck x

My cathetar was a little unruly... the doc said I must have had some kind of UT infection going when they placed it because I swelled up down there like a grapefruit and it kept cutting it off. Pee wouldn't come out... tres painful, so make sure they have done a preop UT test. My doc said that would have ruled it out, but it isn't always done with your preop labs.

Thanks big momma for that info! I def will do that bc I tend to get uti's sometimes from my rv fistula.
