Easing Colostomy Bag Odor

Any suggestions? With my ileostomy I just added a capful of hydrogen peroxide 2% and never smelled a thing. I've tried that with the colostomy and it didn't seem to take. I intend to start using baby oil in my bag to help things move a little, but I have a senstive nose (or I'm paranoid, take your pick) and would like to have that "odor-free" feeling again.

Recovery is hitting the one-month mark and I'm back to many of my old activities (ostomy-enhanced living). This concern isn't enough to keep me from going out, it just something that I find on my mind when at home feeling suspicious that I'm smelling.

again, colostomy-specific suggestions. should i retry peroxide? i'm about to go drop in some mouthwash now...

i used to try stuff, but i don't really too much about it now. When i go out, i carry a bottle of that spray breath freshner, the little kinds like you see people spray in their mouths before dates on TV, the mint kind works best, but this is very important, you must spray BEFORE you empty the bag, and it keeps the smell from getting out into the bathroom. And it also has alchol in it, so if you are in an icky bathroom you can clean stuff up. When i empty my bag at home, i use a water bottle and i put a little bit of mint mouthwash in there, and that does help some. I also use those gel tabs in the bag and that keeps you from having to empty as much

 While I was in the hospital, one of the floor nurses suggested putting a Tic-Tac in my pouch to help control the odor. It sounds gross, but it does work and a cheap way to fight odor.

I think I just heard the same thing about tic tacs or maybe I read it on here.... maybe it was from the chat room... oh well, it sounds like a good idea. I too am gonna try it!

yeah i bet the tic tacs do work, because the smell from them would get you instead of the smell from the bag. Good idea there. I wonder if you could put tic tacs in the bag?

i just got a whole bag, and am headign into the bathroom with them right now! not only would it smell good, it would probably change colors!

I also use the M9 Odor Eliminator drops. I think (though I am not sure) that I read odor is more of a problem with colostomies than illeos. (Is that right?) I tried the peroxide and that didn't work and mouthwash just made it worse (poopy breath? Anyway, I use more of it than what they tell you to use too. Fortunately my insurance covers the 3 bottles I go through each time I order supplies.

Slice, I had to laugh. Now I can't look at tic tacs the same way again either! Ha!

Hi Anyone who will listen I really could use some prayers

My name is sedona I'm 46  I had the following ops 79 appendectomy/85 Hiatal hernia and Hemmhoidectomy/90 Hemmhoidectomy/91 Hysterectomy, Rectocele,Cystocele, Enterocele and vaginal prolapse. 92 Bladder Suspension, Rectocele.  93 Hemmhoidectomy/ 94 Colon Resection 15 inches removed/95 Ventral Hernia, Rectocele and Cystocele/ 2005  Large Rectocele, vaginal prolapse/ May 2006 Colon Resection/ 2006 Bowel Obstruction/2007 Permanent Colostomy, Ventral Hernia.  In August 2007 I had a CT scan done and it revealed I have another Ventral Hernia, Peristomal Hernia my 3 surgeonts said that if I have another surgery it is life threatening and their is a 95% chance that it will be fatal.  My intestines are bulging through my abdomen and it looks like I have 1/3 of a banana beneath my abdomen where the peristoma hernia is located.  Is there anyone that has any suggestions on what I can or should do? 

I also have problems with a smelly stinky odor when emptying my pouch, sometimes it's like smelling a sewage plant.  In the summer time when the A/C is running the smells goes all through my house and it STINKS !!  ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT I CAN DO ???

 

Hi,  I'm new with forums etc.  My husband had ileostomy 4 months with takedown 2/1/08.  I'd like to respond to the last question about odor.  We used M9 product from Hollister with good results.  It's a little pricy at $25 for 8oz.  But we thought it was worth it.  Also, we didn't find a need for lubricant, but a friend said in the nursing home they sprayed Pam.  Good luck.

Now, I'd like to find someone who knows about post takedown.  My husband had his 2/1.  He started eating low residue meals after being home a few days, but now has the sensation to go constantly, but goes only a little.  We see his doc today.  Anyone out there have experience with this?  Thanks.

Hi. I'm a newcomer (29 years young) and stuck with a ostomy/stoma for 6 months due to diverticulitis. I've been having problems with odor slightly leaking out somewhere (i could never find where it leaks out, I use the pouch with folded end that can remove the output..) after reading here, do you guys think it would be wise to use the mint trick?
