she is passing smelly fluid through her urine passage it is also brown coloured, and feeling very sore inside by her breast is this normal

Not sure about the urine, but the soreness by her breast could be gas -- yes, gas. It is awfully painful, but it will pass the more she moves and walks. I know it is hard to say that and do that, but it will work.

Are her doctors aware of this? What did they say?

R u sure the fluid is from her urinal tract and not from her actual vaginal opening? Mayb she has a fistula? Make sure u ask the docs and get back 2 us. I hope she feels better soon

When I had my fistula after my surgery, I started to pass the same icky stuff and swore to the Dr. that it was coming from my bladder. It seemed like it was because it happened when I went to the bathroom. It was only after the next day that I figured out it was vaginal and that's when they knew it was a fistula. The pain in the chest is probably from the gas from the surgery. Mine was very painful up under the diaphram for about a week or so.

the pain probably is gas, the brown icky stuff could possibly be from her period, if she had it right before she went in, or was supposed to right after, mine stopped on Sunday and i had my sugery on tues, and as soon as i started peeing i started having stuff like that. Defintly check with the dr though

thank you guys that has helped alot what is fistula, is it dangerous can it gt better, plz let me know. apart from that she is walking about now aand is feeling and looking alot better. her bag keeps leaking though beacuse her stoma is 11/2 inch and pointing downwards it is making it difficult for her, they have recomended a reversal in 3 months we were hoping to wait at least six but see what happens, she now has a 2 piece stoma bag. the stoma nurses are terrific they make her smile and feel good about it all bless them.

hi guys i just spoke to my sister and she is back on morphine on the fluids and is going for a scan later today, if it is fistula is this the normal procedure will she be ok i am sooooooo woried.

Thanks for the updates on Samie. I'm glad she's feeling better and likes her nurses. :-)

A fistula is a tunnel or hole from the bowel to another part of the body. They are very common with these types of bowel diseases. I had a rectovaginal one for many years, and it healed up after surgery. They are so small that a doctor has a difficult time finding them, so that's why they try to locate them with a scan.

With her stoma pointing downward, have Samie ask the nurses if they can use an Eakin seal around the stoma under the wafer to avoid leaks. We all had leaks in the beginning before we got the hang of things, so that's normal. Since it's leaking, that means her stoma must be working, which is great! Mine took 10 days to work, and it was no fun only being able to eat ice chips for that long.

Please tell her that we're all thinking about her and praying for her. And keep the questions coming. We're here to help in any way we can! :-)

I had my period on January 2 and right after my surgery on January 16th, I got it again. At first I was scared that they had nicked my bladder during surgery, but found out it was a vaginal bleed and that is not abnormal after your body goes through the stress of a major surgery. Does she still have the cathedar in? Is she still on IV fluids? Ask the nurses what her urine output is compared to the fluids she is taking in. Is she having pain when she urinates? That could just be a bladder infection.

I had horrible gas pains up near my front shoulders and walking was the only thing that helped.

As for the fistula, I've never had one, and can't offer any information as to the healing of one. I hope they find out soon what is causing her problems and it's a quick solution. As people have said here before, there are sometimes bumps in the road to recovery, but she will get there. Let her know that she is not alone and a lot of us are thinking of her and praying for her.

My fistula was diagnosed by a CT scan. It has been 8 weeks since I had the ileostomy so that my fistula can heal. My x-ray this past weeks shows that it is almost completley healed except for the very beginning at the colon, so I am waiting for it to close so I can have my reconnect surgery. Fistulas aren't dangerous, but can be messy and depressing. Having the ostomy should allow it to heal on its own. I am learning that there is so much more to these surgeries than I thought. Almost everyone has some complication or another, but things do get better. it has been so cold and snowy this winter, but everytime the sun shines, I take a chair and sit at the window to let the sun shine on my face..really helps my mood and makes this whole thing a little easier to handle.

Mine showed up on the CT scan with contrast dye. I had the final diagnosis from a barium enema..the barium went right into the fistula and it showed up on the x-ray. I watched the dye going all the way from my colon to the vagina. It was very obvious and I did not have to have anything done "down there". I had a second x-ray done last week and there was just a little part of the fistula left. I go back for another barium enema in a few weeks to check on the healing process..woo hoo..love those barium enemas.

Hi Elisha,

Thanks for the update. I hope the medics figure out where the discharge is coming from. I don't really know much about fistulas only that they are a channel from one opening to another which shouldn't be.

I'm sure she will be fine, i couldn't take morphine after a day or two, it made me really itchy!!

Tell Samie i'm thinking of her, and by the way you are one cool sister!!! Well done you.
