Dear Friends:

I know it's off-topic (ostomies) but as part of my medical mystery tour I want to let you know of a recent development. As many of you might know, I had a hole in my throat as a result of being on a respirator for so long. In order to breathe properly I had to ball up two 4x4 inch gauze pads place it in the stoma and bandage it with Medifix tape. In order to speak I had to hold the bandage in place. Needless to say it has been a real pain to have to hold my throat everytime I wanted to speak. Needless to say, my wife would inevitably want to talk when I had both hands busy! Talk about a one-sided conversation! Plus, going back to work, I am sure it has been quite distracting to my fellow workers and clients.

Well, yeterday I had an outpatient surgery procedure and my trache hole is no more! Of course my throat is sore as hell (I stayed home and babied myself all day!) but I'm on my way to recovery.

When I think of where I have come from it truly amazes me. Through a combination of family support, faith, medical expertise and friends like the ones on this site I feel like I have been resurrected. Thank God and thank you all.

Oh such good news Richard! Thank you for sharing all of your experiences. You truly are a wonderful person, and so incredibly strong. I wish you the best of luck with your continued "healing". What an inspiration you are! It's been such a pleasure talking to you and reading all of your hints and stories. I too have so enjoyed my visits with all of the other folks here. I know my experiences are old, but I hope some of them help others.

That is great news!! I'm so happy for you! :-) Although, now your wife won't be able to say, while your hands are full, "Is it okay if I just go buy that beemer I've been wanting?"

wow richard thats awesome! how does that work? do they take skin from somewhere else and place it over the hole? lol@ ur wife wanting to talk when ur hands are full! smart lady!

Congratulations on your new found FREEDOM! You have been through so much; it is amazing that you are such an optimist. Thank you for the update. I always love reading your posts.

Thank you all for your kind words. I would not say that I am not proud of myself for the small part I played, but, I also know this could never have happened without faith, family, friends and excellent medical care.

To answer your question, Praying, I had some excess skin near the stoma that the surgeon used to close it up. The hole itself wasn't quite that large, I used the 4x4s to really block it up, but the hole was about the size of a dime.

My bride of 31 years is not too bummed that I can now speak freely. The additional conversation gives her more things to disagree with me about and to tell me how she is always right!
