Funny feeling after eating?

My brother finally came home today!  He's back to eating small meals but he says afterwards he has a funny feeling...almost like a pain everywhere around his belly.  After not eating for almost 2 months, could it just be his digestive system getting back on track?  His ostomy is still working fine...normal output.  He would take dilaudid in the hospital which helped numb it a bit but now that he's home he's trying not to take the percoset he was prescribed.  Just curious if anyone else had trouble adjusting to eating regular food.

i just had surgery 2 weeks ago and i had the same feeling and posted the same post, they told me it was normal. that it was just getting used to your body doing things differntly. I still feel it every now and then, but its less obvious. Its like almost a pain but not quite. The better he chews his food will help too! Now that i know what feels normal and what doesnt i can't stop eating! Mayb i'll gain back the weight i lost...Hope ur brother adjusts ok

I can't speak to your question, but because I have followed your posts about your brother I just wanted to say that this is really great news that he has been able to come home. that's so wonderful.

Hi Wendy,

So happy to hear that your brother is finally home! My surgery was different than your brother's so I can't help with the abdominal pain issue, but is it the same kind of pain he had in the hospital when they found the abcess? I am assuming he's off the TPN, how is his nausea? I would suggest that he eat 6 smaller meals/snacks as it may take time for his body to adjust. Sometimes the narcotics can slow down the bowels, possibly causing discomfort/constipation, but shouldn't cause pain. If it worsens or he gets a fever of 101, I would call the doctor, otherwise bring it up at his next appointment.

I hope that things improve for him and you can all relax.

Thanks everyone!  I have a feeling the turkey sandwich he had for dinner did him in!  I will suggest the smaller meals until he feels better.  He had a sharp pain under his right ribcage yesterday but he had just had curly fries and a soda an hour before (he had a huge craving and we didn't want to deprive him on the way home :)).  It passed after an hour or so...we think it was gas or possible gallstones which we will need to get checked if it keeps happening after eating certain foods.  I think he's mostly stressed about being home and not having a nurse nearby with a quick solution. 

He had a regular bowel movement last night too...is that normal every so often?

yea! carbonated beverages will definitely cause gas! when he gets that feeling, trust me, even though it hurts, if he can walk around he should, it'll help the gas pass more quickly. If he can't walk around, then he can sit up, that helps too...when u say regular bowel movement u mean out of the back? so its safe to say he still has his colon?
If so, its not really a bowel movement or so i've been told (i've had it too). For those of us who still have our colons, the colon is still secreting the mucus that it secreets when food passes through. So we will still have the urge to go the "regular way". It hasnt been that much tho, in my case, although lately i've been feeling the urge more often, dont know what thats about...

Thank you Praying!  That helps me a lot and I will definitely pass that along to my brother.  He seemed to get better once he got up from a nap so it probably was just gas. 

Yes, he still has a colon.  He passed a "normal" bowel movement soon after the 2nd surgery that was bloody but the dr. assured him that was the leftover stuff that was still in his system and from the surgery.  I completely forgot about the mucus, etc. that still travels through the bypassed area.  That would explain a lot!

I am glad your brother is acclimating better. I am 6 months post op and I still cannot eat a regular meal. I normally eat very, very small and light meals throughout the day.

Hi Amey,

I hope with time you are able to eat regular meals again.  As long as you are able to eat something I guess is the key! 

My brother is so nervous that the hole in his colon from the abscess is never going to heal and that the fluid that might still be leaking is causing another abscess, etc.  Everything sort of ties into that one area where the abscess drain was and where the stoma is, etc.  So if he eats and feels "weird" he immediately thinks it's a major problem.

Your brother is probably very sensitive to everything that is going on right now. He has had a long and challenging road thus far. He truly needs to give himself permission to heal and allow his body to feel strange, different, or unusual. It takes on average about a year to heal internally from this surgery and he is going to have abdominal discomforts for a while. In a month or two he should see some serious progress. He is really fortunate to have you there for support both emotionally and physically. I love the relationship that you both share. I prayer that is that as my son and daughter they will enjoy the same type of relationship that you exemplify.
