Pregnancy after subcolectomy?

Can a woman have children after a subcolectomy? I'm only 23 and hope to have kids in the future and I am having a sub colectomy done in a few weeks. My doctor didn't mention anything about pregnancy affects in the future. Does anyone have any info on this?

I have always been told it's really the situation that led up to the surgery(ie. how sick you were, the extent of the illness) and complications from the surgery itself that may interfere with conception and pregnancy. Things such as scar tissue/adhesions and bowel obstructions.

I'm not sure what a subcolectomy is but I did have a successful pregnancy with an ostomy. I was in a constant state of "flare" with my crohn's disease as well but I carried full term, had a c-section (for crohn's related problems) and she is very healthy, smart, beautiful, and I could go on and on! :-)

Last I heard, the bowel had nothing to do with having kids :p

Seriously though, I know many women with ostomies who have gone on to have kids afterwards. Your ostomy in itself, won't stop you from having kids, but your underlying condition might.

thank you for all of your replies. I just didn't know how a growing baby would effect the cut in the colon. Sorry i am getting a Subtotal colectomy. My gyni will also be in the operating room, looking for endometriosis because they couldn't find my right ovary and I have skiped periods for about 6 months and I had pain with sex. So I got two things being done at once. That's why I'm so nervous. I hate to see how I feel when i wake up from all that, but I'm glad they can do it together. My gyni told me he would remove any endo that he saw. He is also taking a piece of my uterius to test and he is gonna to a hystercopy (put a camera in your uterus). So I'm gonna be sore everywhere!

as you know I am having the same surgery and I asked my surgeon the same question...he said that the surgery should NOT effect any future pregnancies.
