HI ALL!

 

I AM HAVING COLOSTOMY REVERSAL ON THURSDAY YAHOO! MY SURGEON TOLD ME THAT IF HE THOUGHT MY CONNECTION NEEDED MORE TIME TO HEAL THAT HE WOULD DO A TEMP ILEOSTOMY...MY QUESTIONS-----------

 

DO I USE THE SAME TYPE OF BAG?   IF NOT WHAT KIND?

 

WHAT KIND OF OUTPUT IS THERE..? WATERY?

 

WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT  THANKS! HOPEFULLY I WONT NEED IT

Colostomy and ileostomy bags are typically the same. There are some that are specifically designed for each, but nothing too different from eachother. Output with an ileostomy is much more liquidy than a colostomy. Depending on your specific situation, diet can usually help thicken things up. Foods like bananas, bread, pasta, peanut butter, are all stool thickening foods. Immodium works too if your doctor thinks it's necessary. My surgeon also gave me a prescription for Lomotil but I've never had to use it. There are definitely ways to slow things down and thicken things up.

As usual, ash said just about everything there is to be said. When u look under ostomy supplies like on the convatec website or whatever, they all fall under the same category. Except urostomies of course. But i dont think theres much of a difference btwn the bags and flanges. unless of course the size or shape of ur stoma is drastically different. but that can happen with a colostomy as well i assume.

the only difference will be will which wafer/skin barrier you will need a convex or floating flange and that will be determined on your stoma.

Also, some ileostomy wafers are made to be much more durable, considering how much more acidic the output is compared to colostomies.

Because colostomy output is usually thicker, a lot of people can get a way with closed end bags which they just fill, then throw away and put a new one on.

With an ileostomy, this isn't really economical (altho some people do use closed end bags for ileos - as with everything regarding ostomies, it's personal preference) because you will find that the stoma will be working a lot more than it does with a colostomy and output will be looser cos there's less bowel left to absorb the water. Ileostomates usually use drainable bags which they just drain straight into the loo every so often. As a result, you will need to drink more hydrating fluids to replace the lost fluids.

does anyone have any suggestions on how to prep an illy that goes inward? plus mine is not closed on the bottom and i have a fold.
this has been a nitemare for me and i don't think i can wait to be put back together next year. if you have any ideas please
