I have been on Aziathropine for 2 years in October last year i came off the medication as i was having my Illeostomy reversed.All has gone extremely well i have made a full recovery, i went back on my medication in January and my hair is coming out really bad!!! i have never had this before,my gp and IBD nurse say it is the medication causing it,i must stay on the med to control the Crohns.
Has anyone else had this problem,if so how bad does it get?? will all my hair fall out??
I will appreciate any info please

Hi,

I have gone through the same thing after certain meds.  From my experience, not all but a lot of my hair fell out.  It got thin but luckily I had a lot and very thick hair to begin with. My advise to u is if u have long hair do not tie it back in a tight ponytail that loosens the follicle and try to wash it once or twice a week.  To much washing is not good at this stage.  Now this is what i found to help me the most....OLIVE OIL SOAP.  Wash ur hair with it and use a conditioner with avocado oil it...I use redkin conditioner if u have it there.  But importantly, the olive oil soap worked wonders for me.  I hope this helps.  Don't get discouraged, ur hair will come back.

When was your surgery? I had this happen, and it ended up not being the meds - it was the surgery. I hear it is common for this to happen 4 months or so out from surgery. I lost a TON of hair, my ponytail would be half as thick if I were to pull it back, but I did notice it is starting to grow back now. Maybe this is a result of your surgery?

r u saying that 4 months after surgery it started to fall out? or that it fell out for four months after surgery?

It started four months after surgery...And lasted about 1 or 2 months. so, I had Surgery in Aug - it started falling out in DEcember, and is just now stopping.

I had arthroscopic shoulder surgery in November, and I even had some hair thinning from that, and I was only "under" for about 2 hrs. I ended up getting my hair cut short a few weeks back for 2 reasons: I was sick of the long hairs everywhere and my hair took on a funky texture. The hair stylist I go to says that is not unusual for either of theose things to happen --- that the anesthetic usually comes out thru the hair.

Not everyone has hair loss, or at least noticeable loss.  Just keep your fingers crossed!!!  I hope you don't... but even if you do, it iwll come back.  It's not permanent and it won't cause any pain or discomfort!!

I also lost a lot of hair in November after my surgery in August (at first I thought it was because I had colored it myself). I lost most in the back and my bangs thinned out horribly. My doc checked my thyroid because that can also be a cause, but everything came back normal. After my second surgery I lost even more and had to cut my hair short so it didn't look so thin. It's starting to grow back now and is wiry (thank God I have curly hair)
But my hair was thin to begin with so mine was more noticeable. I am using a treatment called "Nioxin" I got at a hair care store and we'll see how it works.

I was on Imuran for years off and on and it never caused my hair to thin, my surgeon told me it was due to the fact of having abdominal surgery.

Hello everyone thanks for replies,i am now hopeful my hair will come back!!!!
I had my last surgery in November,i haven't had any flareups with Crohns for the two years prior to my first op.I am hopeful but i suppose one day it will return.
I wonder what the longest anyone has been Crohns free??

My hair started falling out after taking Methotrexate. What worked for me was Rogaine for Women. You can purchase it in the grocery store in the US without a prescription for about $15 a bottle. It's easy to use ~ just spray it on wet hair. They also sell vitamins especially for hair and nails, which are good, too.

  I too have faced with hair loss but i have undergone a treatment in hair fall.I can see a nice difference in my hair now it has become thick and long.U too  try and see

I use Nioxin too. the shampoo, conditioner and leave-in product. It works WONDERFULLY. in fact, my stylist says I have more hair now, after being on imuran and using the nioxin for 6 months, than before I got UC. It is costly, but in my opinion is totally worth it. and it lasts a long time. also, biotin, a supplement, can be helpful.

your hair grows in three to four month cycles, and the stress of a serious illness, like a really bad flare, or a major surgery, will cause your hair to fall out. the way it was explained to me is, your body takes on so much stress that it starts to ignore the parts that aren't really that necessary, your hair, and after that you may notice your nails being brittle, because if you are missing something your body takes from those things first. DOes that make sense?
anyway, it may last for awhile, but it should go away and come back just fine.

Hello everyone and thanks for replies some sound advice,summerstorm your explanation sounds like it was written for me.
I don't want to sound like i'm whingeing(British stiff upper lip and all that)over the last 2 years i have lost my darling husband to a brain tumour,and had major surgery twice,so it could be the stress thing as well!!!It does all make sense to me and i am encouraged by what you have told me.At the end of the day i am well and hopefully my hair will grow back.

I too lost over half of my hair do to major surgery that put me in the hospital for over two weeks in Aug 07.

My hair was thick and long and I tried everything I could think of and ended up having it all cut off. It was coming out by the handfulls and just made me sick with everything else that was happening in my life.

I ended trying Nioxin shampoo and conditioner and also started taking Nioxin vitamins. You might try it as I think it helped me. It has been six months and my hair is coming backin.

i used that brillant brunette shampoo, and for some reason, that helped more than anything. I had tried all those strength shampoos and stuff for brittle or breaking hair, all the stuff that was supposed to be so great, and that brillant brunette was the best, lol.

i guess i'm losing mine too :o(. I went to the salon the other day and my stylist said it does look like i'm shedding, but its hard to tell b/c my hair was originally so thick....i dont know...just thought i'd share

Hi Everyone,

My first surgery in March 2007 was for CI. Then I had two more elective surgeries. The last being in December 2007. I have been loosing my hair and my nails are ugly. They won't grow and are so brittle. My hair is so thin. The thinning I could live with but then I noticed three small bald spots. I had my blood checked and all was okay. Then I went to the dermatologist this past Friday and he gave it a medical name which I do not remember. Said any number of things can cause it and he said especially stress. He said anesthesia is a big stress agent to the body. Never undestimate what stress can do to you. Anyway, he said I could either put on steriod cream or get steriod shots in the scalp. I opted for the cream for the time being. He said the hair in the balding spots will come back but it will take time. I am lucky I had thick hair to begin with but now it is so thin.

I also cut my hair really short because I too got very tried of the hair on the floor, shower, etc. My hair also has taken on a bad texture. It is stiff feeling, has lost its shine and softeness.

For the first 3-4 months after my surgery my hair definitely was shedding more than usual. Didn't think anything of it until I read this thread. Makes complete sense though. I take a multi-vitamin daily and my nails have grown back and they're nice and strong now. My hair loss has definitely stopped, and it seems like it's slowly getting back to what it used to be. Thank goodness because I look like I'm about 12 with short hair! LOL

Wow, Mags, I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. sad Losing a loved one is very stressful.

my hair problems lasted about two months, but now it's growing back and it's so shiny and pretty again! i also noticed that my eyes don't look so dull anymore

I noticed over the last month or two that my hair has started to get it's fullness back. There's actually parts underneath where the hair must have broken off, but now it's all growing out. I've never had a problem with dryness or shine. I think having a good shampoo/conditioner helps that part of it tremendously. I'm enjoying having my "old" hair back!
