Urge to Poo with temp ileostomy?

Hey all,

Ok, so now that the itchies have been cleared up I have another question: Starting tonight after dinner I've been progressively more urgent sensations to have a BM. This is a first since my surgery ( a week to the day) and am unsure whats in store for me. Does this mean I will have to poo in the middle of the night? I have to be at my doc's bright and early tomorrow morning for a follow-up appt. I thought I wouldn't have to worry about needing a restroom during the 30+ min car ride there...but of course my body enjoys throwing these curve balls during the worst possible times. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

exactly what stacy said...even tho my doc said don't push....just let it come out. dont strain cuz u can still give urself hemmorhoids (sp?)

Adding my vote that it is a normal occurence. When it first happened when I was in the hospital the attending nurse freaked when I asked for a bed-pan! "How can you have any output?!", the doc set matters straight later on.

 Just felt the need to put my two cents in. I can't remember any doctor telling me to expect those urges after surgery. Luckily, the good people on this forum helped me realize that it was normal after a total colectomy. I still have the urges after 6 months but not as often. Plus, the drainage is continuous. Sound gross but it isn't that bad. From what I have read you will be better after the next surgery.

Yes you still get output, there's still have some stuff in the system beyond the illeo. I had 3 boom booms after my surgery. Not to worry.

Totally normal (I agree I don't know WHY they don't mention this beforehand). You will get some output on occasion AND the urge to poop. Just go sit on the can until it passes if needed. The urges are stronger right after surgery and gradually fade over time.

i get way more than I would have imagined.....it's not bad though, and far less painful than a real BM used to be.....
