Has anyone ever tried an ostomy belt like the Phoenix Ostomy Support System or anything like that?  I just had my surgery last monday and I am trying to adjust to this bag with my clothes and just in general.  I don't like "feeling" the weight of it hanging so I thought that I might be able to get this belt but I just don't understand how easy it would be to empty it because it is on sideways.  If you have used one and liked it then which one did you choose and if you used one and didn't like it, which one and why?

I went to my stoma nurse and she recommended wearing a stoma belt.. I ordered one and am waiting for it to arrive! Excited!! ^.^

Um to be honest I'm not sure LOL I went and asked for one and she said she'd order me a couple. They should arrive tomorrow so I'll post and say.. but I think they're by the Coloplast people.

i honestly don't understand the point of them
chili-once you have had the bag for awhile, and your stomach isn't tender, and your bag isn't filling up as fast, as it does that close after sugery, and you get back to wearing your regular clothes, it doesn't do that. At first i felt the same way, it was driving me crazy! i actually walked around with my hand on top of my shorts holding it up when i was alone, that looked crazy, lol. But it got much better after a while

So do you guys put the bag inside your blue jeans?  I wear low rise blue jeans so I feel like the waistband of the blue jeans hits the pouch and/or the actual stoma in the wrong spot so I am either afraid that I am going to damage my stoma or bust the bag.  Also, I have a stoma nurse coming today so I hope that she can help me with setting it up so it works for me.  It also feels REALLy long so I have asked her about shorter ones and also the mini's (maybe).  I have to figure out a way to make this work and be comfortable so I am less conscience of it.  I know it is all new and I am sure that it will settle but at this point, I know I have not found a method that I am comfortable with.  I was thinking that the belt may be a good idea for me because I feel it "hang" as it fills and it just lays on my leg.

i put mine inside my undies, then tuck the end back up to the side, so that thereis none hanging out

Hey Chili123,
I just ordered my Nu-Hope ostomy belt today. I had to go back to the hospital where I had surgery 6 months ago and get fitted. I am so excited about having that support. I hope no one has had bad luck with one because I hope this helps with my buldge which just appeared recently. And I certainly don't want to think about any more surgery. I sound like Obama with all this hope. Ha?

The stoma nurse came yesterday and I am pretty excited. I was in a 2-piece convatec and she introduced me to a one piece and it is called Secure. If you can love a pouch..........I love this one (atleast so far). It has a wider bottom so the weight of the stool is more evenly distributed within the bag, it rolls up higher so it is substantially shorter, it seems to allow less air in it and the smell doesn't even seem to be as bad. Plus, I WAY prefer the one piece opposed to that big plastic ring that shows through my clothes and I really like being able to feel my stomach around the stoma opposed to that ring. I really felt like I had some foreign object attached to me. I figure that if I anticipated needing to switch pouch styles that I may opt to have a two piece every so often but for the day to day same thing.......I clearly prefer the one piece. She said that this style was new so fyi if you have not tried it. By the way, the rash that I have - she said is from too much product. She said "less is more" so not to use the adhesive remover and skin barrier. I liked everything she said because she simplified it so not so complicated. By the way, I still cannot figure out how to empty the pouch with a ostomy belt. Isnt' the pouch on sideways?

yah, what's the deal, who actually uses the pouch belts? wouldn't them being on sideways, cause all the liquid to pool around the stoma?

chili123, are you sure the Coloplast brand you're talking about is not Sensura? They also have Assura. I have used Coloplast products a long time and never heard of Secure. Sensura is their newest line. Just curious. I always like to hear about the new products.

OK, this is a dumb question, but I assume you have to change the one piece bag several times a day, don't you? I have never used anything but a two piece ConvaTec system because that is what I had on when I came home from the hospital. I was thinking that the skin around the stoma might become irritated if you change the whole thing so much. I so much want my life to be easier. With summer coming soon here in Dixie, I don't know what to expect when I start sweating buckets every time I leave the house. I'm still waiting for the ostomy belt. It must be quite a job to "construct" one.

It is a one piece but a drainable. The nice thing about the one piece for me is that it doesn't have the stiff waifer around it so it is more flexible. I have not bought a belt or anything. I have somewhat adjusted but still struggling kinda with blue jeans.

Jennie, for those of us with ileostomies, we use drainable bags, ie we open the tail end of the bag and drain the contents into the loo, leaving the actual bag intact. Closed end bags, while some do use them, aren't very economical for us.

Because colostomy output is so much thicker than ileo output, drainable bags are harder to use as it's harder to drain everything out, therefore closed end bags are much more convenient to just take off and pop a new one on.

Hope this clears up any confusion :)
