Eight times in the past 24 hours the bags have come off with major leaks.  Same bags, same paste, same procedure, but something is not kosher.  The skin has reddened and there's some swelling.  Even opened another box of bags in case we got a bad lot.  Same thing. It's like the stickum on the wafer lets loose prematurely.  Any insights or suggestions.  We're stuck at the edge of the wilderness where there's not much expertise and only one GI doctor in the whole county.

I'm sorry to hear you're having so many problems. Having to change 8 times within 24 hours is not something you should have to be dealing with. What brand of bags are you currently using? Is this the only brand you've used? Are you using a 2 piece or a 1 piece?

Have you tried Eakin Seals? I know a lot of people here swear by them. What is your routine as far as applying the wafer? There has to be something that is not allowing these wafers to stick properly and effectively. Are you washing the skin with a certain soap or anything that may be compromising the seal of the wafer?

I'm so sorry you're having wafer problems. sad The ostomy nurse in the hospital told me to hold my hands over the edges of the wafer for about 5-10 minutes after applying it. She said that the heat from your hands helps activate the stickiness of the wafer, so you get a good seal. I've always done that and haven't had any problems with wafers not sticking. Hopefully, that will help.

I have had those kind of days too. Cecelia is right on. I think heat helps to "seal the deal". I even use a hairdryer sometimes to heat up the area. I also try not to lay down right after changing so the stuff doesn't back up around the wafer until it seals. Hope you find the answer.

Also Jan,

Where r u storing your supplies? I've been wondering if this makes a difference. Like if we store them where it is too hot, or too cold does it contribute tho their effectiveness? Do u have a nurse u can call to get some assistance? I can't imagine how ur skin must b doing with the constant putting on and takingo off. I hope u find relief soon

Thanks everyone,

I use coloplast Sen Sure since I had the ileostomy. Didn't have a problem with leaking untill yesterday. I have know idea what has causeed the problem.

Before I change the bag, I shower and use adhesive remover wipes,
and skin prep. Then I put the bag on.

My skin is really red and swollen, from changing the bags so many times.

We live in a small town out in the sticks and it really scarie when you have no where to go late at night.

I did end up going to the hospital her where they have a stomy nurse that has been here for a year and a half. She checked me over and put a different bag on me and cut the whole bigger. Guess I will see what happenes.

She wants me to try Convex one pice drainable pouch. we ordered some today. She said the swelling is still changing my stoma. Guess that could be one of my problems. Sure hope this works as I don't know what else to do.

Sleap in a chair last night as I wae afraid to go to beb incase I made a big mess if I didn't wake up.

My stoma, which is from a temp. "loop" ileostomy, sometimes seeps from the bottom side, where the skin is not as tightly attached to the stoma, as it is on the top end of the stoma. When that happens (which I can't control), the wafer leaks much more quickly. You need to leave the pouch off for a while and look at it after you get out of the shower (making sure you don't make a mess). IF you see that there is some fluid coming from the bottom side of your stoma, that is probably the problem.

what i did is use the Eakin seals, and used the moldable convatec type wafers, and just cut some of the wafer out of the bottom side, so if it does weep, it can weep into the pouch, instead of between the rolled up wafer and tape.

When they make your ileostomy permanent, can they fix your stoma so it doesn't leak from the bottom?

Glad.

I have a loop as well and my output is mainly from the bottom 2. Thankfully I .haven't had n e leaks from that as of yet. However I just ordered the molables and I was just curious as to what u meant about cutting the bottom of the wafer so it van leak n2 the pouch. Can u elaborate?
