  This one is for the ladies!! I had a sub colectomy and illiostomie late September last year. Since then I have been on a search for a contraception method that is affective for me. I was previously taking the pill and was told that it would have no effect once I had the surgery. I find it so annoying not being able to control my period and also using the ‘mood killers.’ Any advice would be most welcomed.

I had to give up the pill with my ileo, too.  There are some others that can help with your period:  Depo shot, Nuva ring and patch.  It would depend on what you and your doctor decide on.  I tried the patch for a while, but discontinued it when it was determined to cause more blood clots and also tried the ring which wasn't a problem for me.

They all have side effects, so I would depend on which one you were okay with and if it worked with your body.

Interesting....I was never on the pill before my surgery and when I was on it after, I did not care for it. So many forms of bc use hormones which is the main reason why I won't go on them--mood killers! Sorry, I've got nothing. I use "pull and pray" and I'm thinking of getting permanent b.c.--those coil things they put in the fallopian tubes.

My saint of a husband went in and had a vasectomy. I'll never forget the day when he Googled "Pain-free vasectomy" and actually found a doctor in our area who performed them. The doctor sprayed on the anesthetic, so there were no needles, and made two tiny incisions. It was all done outpatient in 15 minutes, and my husband never even took a Tylenol for pain. We were amazed at how easy and pain-free it was for him!

DH got fixed too, it's so much easier for men.  Like CeCe said, it was done in the office, although DH did take some pain pills, and lay around with frozen peas on the area for a day or two,lol.
Why can't you take the pill?

Oh really? I was on the pill for quite a few years for birth control (and it apparently worked). After I went off the pill I became pregnant and had 2 children. I then was on a low dose birth control pill for a few years for peri menopause symptoms (and it helped), and then hormone therapy for menopause. I stopped taking the hormone pills and the symptoms (hot flashes, sweats, etc.) came back. So I don't know if I was benefiting from a placebo effect or if they were really working. This is he first I've heard about birth control pills not working for ileostomates ....

really? they are so small, it seems they would break down quickly. I wonder why they break down slower than other pills

I used to be on the pill and had the same problem, so I got Implanon which is like a little hormone stick implanted in your arm. It gives excellent contraception for 3 years.. apparently it's more reliable than getting sterilized :S It didn't hurt either, had it done in my GP's office in about 10 minutes :)

Hey everyone, while we're on the subject of birth control pills - I don't have to worry about taking birth control pills for "birth control" since my husband was "fixed", but I take them for Acne control and periods. However, I thought if I switched to Yaz from Ortho Trycolene (sp?), it would help even more with these two concerns. My face and neck are more broken out then ever. I'm 43 years old and thought I'd be long over getting pimples. Is the Yaz not working because it's not absorbing in my system enough? I don't see the pills coming through the bag.

Don't we have enough problems to deal with then having bad periods and acne?!

Any thoughts, advice?

I've been using the NuvaRing for over a year now and I LOVE it. You leave the ring in for three weeks and then take it out for one week to have your period; you can't feel it at all and you can even have relations with it in though I don't like to and just pull it out real quick, but I've not had any of the usual BC side effects (weight gain, acne, etc) and I'm still not pregnant so it must be good :) And you can even put a new ring in on the fourth week if you want to skip your period.

I was just told to take Calcium & Vitamin D supplements. I can't remember the suggested dosage at the moment but they make Women's Caltrate for Colon Health so I take that. I was diagnosed when I was 19 though and was supposed to go back for another bone scan in 10 months to check the turnover rate, but I never did. So I don't know if it has helped or if I've lost more or not.

Well, they determined the cause was because I have used so much prednisone for long periods of time since having ulcerative colitis. I do plan on requesting one though as soon as my insurance is active on July 1st this year.
One question though.. What is a walkvest?
