My poor son just needs a break, as I'm sure you can all relate to.  He had an ileostomy Friday, the 18th.  We came home on the 22nd and he was eating and doing well. On Thursday, he started to develop these blisters in his mouth. The doctor said it was a viral infection and it just had to run it's course (she said it wasn't Thrush). It's now a week later and they are all in his mouth and down his throat. Has anybody experienced anything like this?

it does sound like thrush to me, his mouth would be kind of white and he will taste a really yeasty smell. this sounds really strange but fresh pineapple will really help that.
Steroids and other UC meds can give you ulcers and i know he is off those now, but they could be withdrawal from the steroids. there is this product called cur-a-sore, it's this liquid stuff you can put on fever blisters and stuff, it says not to use it internally but i always do, don't drink it though! it works really really well, youjust dab a little on each place with a q-tip and hold it on the spot for about 30 seconds, fair warning though, it BURNS! but it's worth it to get the blisters gone.

Thanks for the info.  He's doing OK.  I don't think he's really had time to think about the ileostomy b/c his mouth hurts so much, but we went to the doctor yesterday and she said he was dehydrated and she was thinking about admitting him to the hospital for IV fluids, so when we got home he took two Tylenol III and had some mac and cheese and we got him to drink a quart of Smart Water.  He had a small piece of cake and his spirits seemed to be up.  He's had to change his bag 4 times since the surgery and they've all been with a nurse's assistance.  He gets real queezy and light headed. He says it's because it's sensitive and kind of gross, but the nurse assures me that it will get easier each time. Thanks for asking!

My 17 yr old daughter is going thru the same thing.  She had hers on April 15.  This is a very hard age to have to go thru this.

i was really queasy and light headed at first too, i was complelty grossed out by it! but after a while it just becomes second nature, and you dont even think about it anymore. Plus, after you have had it for a while, the stuff that comes out isn't as icky and doesn't smell as bad.

Yes, it gets easier with time. It's hard to believe but it will really become second nature. Tell them to hang in there.

Thanks for the reassurance.  He says it's still tender from the surgery. I'm not sure how long that lasts.  He's trying a new bag. It's opaque and it has a filter.  He figured while he's hanging around at home mostly, he could try different things.  He likes the opaqueness, and the two part bag.  He hopes he'll like the filter, but he doesn't want it to smell.  Time will tell.  Thanks again.  I can't tell you guys what piece of mind it gives me to be able to ask you all my questions and there's always someone who has dealt with the same thing and has ideas.  Right now I'm trying to read the positive posts and not freak out about all the things that could happen.  One day at a time.

it will be tender for a while, probably at least two months, it won't HURT but it will be more sensitive. I had sort of an annoying feeling over my incsision for almost three months. So that is normal. As for the filters they don't let smell out, but they don't do much either, if he is worried about them smelling, just put one of the little stickers over them, or a piece of medical tape, i don't have trouble with a smell, but for some reaosn that makes me feel better to do that
