Tail closures & 2 piece pouch

I have an ileostomy and I've used one piece pouches w/ clip since 1969. I have worn the Convatec Active Life for 23 years and am no longer tolerating tape adhesive very well. So I've been auditioning samples from Hollister, Coloplast and newer Convatec products that do not have tape adhesives. Skin is doing much better and I'm not having problems with leaks, wear time varies. I have 3 questions:
When I used a clip, it was simple to wipe, fold a piece of toilet paper over the end, roll & clip and go. With the new velcro closures it seems less neat & tidy and definitely more messy. How are others keeping the tail closure and hands clean? I travel extensively and have to deal with public bathrooms at work, not in the habit of taking supplies into a stall.
With the 2 piece systems, if the flange is staying intact, do you throw away the pouch and put a new one on every few days or what?
Last question - have any ileostomates found the filters to be effective? Will they work if you use an absorbent ge like ile-sorb (Cymed)?

Appreciate any advice - I was very happy with the Active Life pouches - good wear time & no leaks for a very long time despite a very active lifestyle - would have stayed with that product if I hadn't developed a sensitivity to the tape. Hope to find a new product that lasts 20 more years...!

lp-I recently "auditioned" new product and found, for me, that the Hollister New Image's was the most user friendly.  It doesn't need a tape/sticker over the filter when showering/swimming.  It does have a "fabric" adhesive on the wafer (I use a two piece) but it is nothing like the Convatec I used to use (it was more paper like).  I did try the Coloplast Extended Wear and it had more of a "plastic" wafer, but I did not like the velcro closure (it leaked  more easily) and the wafer did not work for my uneven stomach.

I definately know what you are saying about cleanliness with the velcro...I found that if I take a good amount of paper and first clean the end, I can go at it a second time with a little less paper and get the area of the first two folds.  That way it doesn't tend to mess as much.  I was not a huge fan of the clipless while using Convatec, but the Hollister has been easier to use.

I'm new to this whole thing and was given a couple of convatec clip model pouch and a velcro closure model pouch..
In my opinion the velcro has the clipped model beat hands down.

I find that the velcro job has the plastic tabs near the opening that you can press to open the mouth of the pouch to insert the water bottle cleaner that I use without gucking up the end of the bottle, and trying to open the opening while its stuck together
I also find the tail a bit longer making it less tricky to spill back into the toilet..
I like to fold the plastic piece turtleneck like to help keep it clean during discharge.
Re- fold the velcro and your good to go, no clip diggin into my side
never had no leak problems,, yet,, tongue
Funny I guess, I'm actually going into the city tomorrow to get looked at by the ET nurse, see what she comes up with...
There might be other makes out there, but as far as it goes I'm fairly happy with the velcro closure job. :-)
I'm also not too fond of the tape also.

i had the clips in the hospital and did not trust them they seem so flimsy, plus they hurt. 

anyway, i dont really have a lot of trouble with the velcro beign dirty, when i am at home, i use a water bottle, and if i shoudl get some poo on the velcro part, i use a little mouthwash on a piece of toilet paper and it cleans right up.  It is harder to clean it in a restroom without water, but you get used to it, and can do it easier each time. 

As for the filters, i have found no use for them at all!  sometimes i just tape over them, but usually i just ignore them.

Well after my trip to the city, I've come back with a totally new setup!
and let me add It feels just great!,, never thought I'd be saying that!! haha

They took off my Convatec model and re installed a Hollister.
way smaller tape area, and it doesn't have the wafer sticking right to my skin,
it has somewhat of a gasket to join the wafer and the pouch so I can move freely with out haveing this big wafer digging in everytime I move!!
I also went with the flushable bag system,,, its just so simple
a liner bag slips inside the pouch and when full slips out and goes down the drain,,, no muss, no fuss :-)
I feel like a new man... I can walk good and don't have this canning jar ring, haha, stuck to my side. tongue

I never knew just how many options there are out there...
The ET nurses were so helpfull, I can't say enough good things about them!!

Hopefully you can find the perfect setup for you as well!!!!

Hi,
I had a perforated colon back in April 2005.I have had great success with the coloplast Assura two piece,the flange or baseplate is changed about every 7 days and the pouches are removed and thrown away daily,no cleaning or leaks or mess of any kind.just my 2 cents.

I've had an ostomy for 19 years, and I have experimented with, just about, everything on the market. I didn't care for the Velcro ones either. To me, the benefit of not having a clip wasn't worth the mess I was experiencing with the Velcro. I use the 2 piece Convatec system. It's never given me a problem, and I've NEVER had a bad pouch with them! I guess it's "whatever floats yer' boat", because we all seem to be happy with different appliances.
