Vomiting after ostomy reversal

Hello All,

My brother just had his ileostomy reversal on Thursday.  He was very nauseous that night and was dry heaving overnight.  Friday was better but he felt "funny" and was still nauseous and threw up some ice cream that night.  Saturday seemed good until he sat down that night and proceeded to throw up all of the liquids he drank that day.  He has had a few "regular" bowel movements (last night and this morning) and he doesn't have a fever, etc. 

Is the vomiting/nausea the leftover effects from the anesthesia?  Or does vomiting normally happen after a reversal since it takes time for the bowels to wake up?  He's been walking around and moving quite a bit but still has some belly pain.  From our experience in the last 6 months, we can't help but wonder if he has another leak or if there is a blockage, etc.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I had my reversal on 5/9 (a Friday) and I was nauseous pretty much thru Monday.  My doctor said it was a reaction to the anesthesia. He compared it to a bad hangover.  They gave me Zofran for the nausea, which helped some, but it just had to run its course.  I don't know why it affected me that time and not for the longer surgery to remove my colon.  How's your brother doing today?

Hi Candyland!  Thanks for the reply.  I figured it was the anesthesia but he's still kind of nauseous today...4 days later.  I'm wondering if eating will actually help or just make him throw up.  He's been on liquids but is really hesitant to drink too much or eat anything for fear that he'll throw it back up.

is he still taking pain meds? casue they can make you feel really sick too. I know that if i feel really icky, sometimes eatitng a little will help, maybe try a few crackers.

That's what I thought too.  He's still taking dilaudid but only about twice a day.  The nausea better today but the gas is agonizing.  He tries to eat a little and then feels the gas creep up on him again.

Encourage your brother to get up and walk and continue to walk. This will help with moving the gas along as well as curing the ileus. This set back is a normal complication following abdominal surgery. It will get better.

also laying on your left side can help gas, also rocking (i know that sounds weird, but drs actually have rockign chairs put in hosptial rooms sometimes to help the patients with gas!) another thing that helps is to lay on your back and put your legs up and sort of pump them back and forth. You have probably seen someone do that to a baby when they have bad gas.

Thank you so much for the tips!  I will mention the rocking and the leg pumping.  I didn't think of that. 

My brother has been walking a lot but I guess it just needs to run its course.  He's using the loo about 30+ times a day.  Does it ever slow down? :)
