Is there a video anywhere that deals with a colostomy?

Does anybody know of a good website that shows someone actually cleaning and caring for a stoma?  I found a couple people who have posted stuff youtube, but they are a little strange.  I was wondering if there was anything else out there I could have my husband watch so he is a little more prepared for what is to come.

Hi Ladyhawk,

I too wanted my fiancee to SEE what a real ostomy looked like before the surgery so that he would know what to expect.  I found a video that shows up close and in detail a lady and her stoma as she is changing her bag.  For me, this video was comforting, and I got more used to seeing what a stoma looks like.  Now, this woman has an ileostomy, not a colostomy, but the stomas are pretty similar (colostomy is on the other side of the tummy and usualy just slightly larger stoma).  Also, if you choose to wear a colostomy bag, it will look similar to what the woman is using the the video.

The part I am talking about is in the middle of the video.  I think the whole thing is about 8-10 minutes long.  Hope this helps! :)

Little E, I wanted to thank you again for sending this link.  It is by far the best video I have seen information wise.  I'm sending in onto the family and friends that have questions about my surgery and afterward.  Thank you!

Youre very welcome!  This video really helped me and my fiancee a lot get a picture of what I was going to look like. :)  It also really helped me realize that I would not look that bad (I think that lady looks great in the video...!)

2 Things I also wish I was told before the surgery (if you are having ileostomy surgery):

1. Right after surgery, your output from the stoma will be dark green, completely liquid and smell awful.  This is normal.  As you begin to eat, output will thicken up, not be green all the time and smell waaaay less!

2. After surgery, you will have Lots of gas many times each day.  This is embarrassing--it basically sounds like you are passing gas the "normal" way, but since it is out of your stoma you have no control about when it comes out, and it can be much louder than you would think...!  I was so scared that this would continue forever (and I am a teacher, for crying out loud, can you imagine "sounding off" in front of a bunch of kids...? :(  ) BUT after about 2 months, I do not have any more gas (yayyyyy!)--so don't worry, it will go away!
