Leaking problems

Hi there! I'm kind of new to this. My 3 year old daughter had a total colectomy with ileostomy done about a month ago. In the past week or so we've been having a leak almost every day in the same spot. We have been changing the bag out every day when it leaks and it's getting old. I'm just wondering what we could be doing wrong and why it would be leaking in the same spot every time. Prior to this we were only having to change the bag (with a leak) about every 3 days. Any pointers? We are using Hollister One piece Pouchkins if that helps any.

Shaz, our moderator, may have some knowledge about Pouchkins - she's had an ileostomy for a long time and has been around these forums.

The only thing I can recommend is to try using part of an Eakin Seal, which is made of a material similar to the "sticky round part that goes over the stoma". This Seal is stuck to the area just around the hole where the stoma goes through the sticky round part to provide an extra seal or barrier to prevent leaks. I really don't know much about the Pouchkins, but just assume they are a smaller version of what we adults wear.

I think justjenjen is right on the mark...do you have a catalog for your supplier? I think it might be Convatex that has many different items--paste, strips, rings--to help build up/reshape the stoma area for the wafer (they would be in the regular section, not the peds section).

The Eakin seal is something I use everytime because I have a very uneven stomach and it works great...it can even be cut/shaped to do the build up in a area that needs it. I am sure it can be very challenging with a growing child who's tummy probably changes on a daily basis!!! Educate yourself with what is out there and get with your/her ET Nurse...I am sure you'll get it figured out in no time.
