Reconnecting? Advice?

I have had an ileostomy for ten months now and I must say that after the first few months of getting used to the bag, and how to manage it well, it is really OK!! No one can even tell that I have an ostomy, and there is total control (compared to crohns episodes). I have to make the decision whether to get the ostomy reversed and be "hooked up" again, and I am having a very hard time deciding. Here is my story . . .

I went in for a "routine" bowel resection (my first) that fell apart after four days. I was rushed to emergency surgery with peritonitis and I almost died. I recovered, but with "open wound" healing that has left me with a huge abdominal hernia (and a temporary ileostomy). I know that I have to have surgery to repair the hernia and my surgeon wants to reverse the ileostomy at the same time. The problem is that since I have had the ostomy, I have no symptoms at all from Crohns and I have not been taking any medications at all! If I get hooked up again, I will have to resume Humira and asacol, and perhaps endure Crohns flares again. It seems that my colon is the only place that I have Crohns. . .

Does anyone out there have experience with having a temporary ostomy and then getting hooked back up?

Thanks so much Ohio . . . I really am struggling with the decision . . . both my gastroenterologist and my colo-rectal surgeon are urging me to do it and think it will be successful . . . but I appreciate hearing your story. It's good to know that you survived OK with a reversal of a reversal!! That may be my option, to try the reversal and I can always go back to the stoma if I need to.

I have been so impressed with the ostomy support group that we have here in the DC area, they are terrific and we have a great time with "stoma jokes"!!
