Stoma Bag Smell: suggestions needed

I have finally undegone first step of J-POUCH surgery and i am so happy to have

done it after 6 years of suffering from UC.

Now i am adapting to the ileostomy and stoma bag. However, i need suggestions with how

to manage the smell when i change the bag. I have heard that there are pills

that u can put in the bag. Do they work? What are they? Do i need prescription for these pills.

the gel tabs help with the smell some, but they make the stuff pretty hard to get out. I use them when i go out only, because they make it thicker and its easier to move it around in the bag so you can hide it better. That will makesense after you have had the bag a while,lol.
I don't know how long it's beensince you had surgery but the first couple of weeks it smells somuch worse than it will after you have had it for a while. But like Ohio said some people use mouthwash or peroxide. i did use mouthwash, but i don't really worry too much about it now.
Although i did get one of those tiny little bottles of sweet breath, and put a few drops of that in there, and that worked better than a cap of mouthwash. I think it must be stronger or something.
You can get the gel tabs from the company you get your supplies for, the ones i use are called gel-x. You know what a diaper looks like inside? that's what it makes the poo look like, cause it's basically silica gel in a tablet form.

Well I'm new to this too but I remember the first while it stunk so bad it made me want to be sick but it definately dies down after a while and becomes quite bearable.  I've taken tips from here like eating jelly babies and marshmallows yummy

Mouthwash works great for me, and I like that it's inexpensive.

Same here. I buy the generic Lysterine by the jug, and it's still way cheaper than M9 Drops.

Yep Nene205, u r right, im going for j-pouch in january so i dont have to put up with it for too long.

There is ostomy bag deoderizer one is called bannish and the other is called m9 by hollister. Both are good the m9 is cheaper. It should be covered by your insurance also. I also use liquid soap when I empty and rinse my bag out at home.
