Hi,

Has anyone had a reversal successfully done with only 6 feet of intestines left?? I have a hight output and they're controlling it with Opium drops but I'm still hoping for a reversal. Can anyone give me anything on this please??

Hi Ritas,  I think that I only have about that much colon left, and I just had a reversal.  I know that from reading older posts to this forum, some folks have much less than that and have had reversals, so it is not impossible. 

When you say that you have a high output, I am not sure what that means.  When I had my ileostomy, I was having to empty my bag every two hours or so throughout the day and night . . . the biggest downside to the ostomy for me.  I am now still healing and getting my bowels regulated, but I am able to go 4-5 hours at night without a BM!!  This is total heaven for me!!

Hi Rita: I am also trying to get some info on reversal for my father. He has had an ileostomy x 1yr due to a lg blod clot to his bowel. I think he lost about 8-12 feet. He also has a very high output from his ostomy . We are fighting dehydration constantly, and aside from eating he has to be feed 5-6 cans of a liqid supp. When we try and stop it he ends up in the hosp. He is now considering reversal but we are all concerned about diarrhea. It would be terrible if he could not control his bowel.

Everyone is diffrent but I only have about 10 feet of mine.I had my reversal in june.Every thing is O.K. but I do have diarrea all of the time.It gets worse if I eat the wrong thing and you dont always know what that might be.If I get sick or if I have to take a new medication or just strease.Most of the time I can control it but I have had a few accidents.I have to have 2 B-12 shots a month (I am guessing that you do to) and potasssiam every day (this is hard on my stomich).You will have to ask your DR. what he thinks. JMRN I dont know how old your father is but if I was you I would have a real good talk with his surgen to me it sounds like he might have a bad time if he was reversed.You should post your own topic and you could get alot more info from the people on this site.

Just to add to these posts,  I had my reversal on November 3rd, after having an ileostomy for 10 months.  I have about one-third of my colon left (how many feet would that be?). Right after the reversal, I had diarreah really bad for about 4 days, then they gave me some immodium and I was OK.  I have been recovering well, and I am now down to about 5-6 BMs a day . . . mostly formed!  This is a major improvement.  Like mom9mom, I have to be careful with what I eat . . . some things set me off.  However, I am so far REALLY happy with the reversal.  I would definitely talk it over with at least two Drs. to get their opinions before you go forward.
