colon after ileostomy

hi

when someone has had an ileostomy for a number of years, the colon is left

doing not a lot! has anyone then experienced problems with the colon eg

infection, bleeding etc?

i am not sure what you mean, your colon is not in there anymore, its in a glass jar somewhere or in the trash.
maybe you mean when a jpouch is created and then not used?

hi

my husband had the ileostomy 8 years ago after a resection went wrong. it left his colon in place - one end is a mucous fistula just above the ileostomy.  the bleeding is coming through the fistula and his back passage. plus a lot of discharge. his consultant is talking about a camera through his colon to see what's going on. He said that because the colon has just been left there for so many years, it is unhealthy but shouldn't be bleeding etc.

thanks for replying. i am searching the internet for an answer, but getting nowhere fast

oh sorry i didnt understand what was happening, lol. why did they leave his colon in?

hi

his colon was left in because the ileostomy was done as an emergency as the original resection went wrong. he has Crohns, and a perforated duodenal ulcer which resulted in sepsis. his surgeon said that he couldn't get to his colon because of adhesions. so they left it and put one end as a mucous fistula. this is now bleeding and he hasn't eaten for a week, lost 7 lbs already. help!

i think they need to go in and take it out. I have never heard of such a thing happenign! i'm just curious what country are you in?
i htink you might need to be getting a second opnion and maybe going to a more specialized specialist, i know that sounded weird, but i mean a specialist that has a lot more experince like maybe in a bigger area.

we're in England. he went in for a straight forward resection and came out 6 months later - ileostomy, diabetic, mRSA , pneumonia, blood clot, shingles ........if they had said he was pregnant i wouldn't have been surprised! this site kept me going 8 years ago and i thank you for your advice and time. take care.

st helens...if he doesn't feel like eating and is losing weight that fast, get him to the doc! There is a point when things are not normal...keep us posted on the diagnosis.
