How many of you have issues with adhesions? My GI Doctor mentioned them to me and I never really thought much about them until I started reading up on them yesterday. I know anyone who has had any type of surgery (especially abdominal) has a very high possibility of getting them, but I just wanted to know how many of you actually get pain from them?

I had jpouch surgery 8 years ago and haven't yet had a problem with adhesions.  I get an ocassional twitch which I think is an adhesion but nothing to complain about.  Some people are more prone for developing adhesions than others and some have chronic problems with them.  I don't think there is anyway to know who's more apt to develop them or not.

Thank you for your insight suebear (you're always so helpful with my questions) :)! I read some horror stories about them on adhesions.com and scared myself, some of those stories are terrible! But I have had a few pulling sensations since my surgery in December and I'm assuming they are due to adhesions. I can deal with the pulling, but I hope to never have some of the severe pains that others have!

I've had a few incidents but have not required surgery for them in many years. They usually are the cause of my blockages. They also think that is what is causing my stomach pain --- when they do an EGD, they cannot see a thing; however, once the dr. inflates my stomach to take a look around during the procedure, the pain of the adhesions goes away. Stretching my stomach works! (Thank goodness.) It took a lot of trial and error to find that out.

I sure hope that you don't have any issues with them. Certainly not unusual to have the twitches and all. Best of luck to you.

Hello Peggy, thank you so much for replying back! :) What does the pain feel like from the adhesions? Does it usually happen in the same area as the surgery site?

Not necessarily, but many times it can be in the area of the resection/removal. They are not explained very well, so no one can say for sure. From what I understand, they can show up anywhere in the abdomen.

i haven't had surgery yet, but i've read about "sepra film" and "adept" for the prevention of adhesions. these subtances are used by the surgoen at the end of the surgery. i've asked 2 surgoens about it and they praised it and said it's very effective and that it's a good thing to use them, so i'm gonna order them for my surgery. have any of you heard about this? do you have any info about ppl who had these subtances in their surgery?

i hope you don't have issues with ashesions too, lentil!!

I have heard of Seprafilm and have read up on it in the past. I think it actually dissolves in your abdomen rather quickly .. I guess most adhesions start forming really quickly after surgery and the seprafilm helps. It's been a long time since I researched that, but it sure can't hurt, right? I just can't believe if it is a Good thing why the surgeons wouldn't use it for EVERY abdominal surgery that they do. I guess there is a reason, but prevention to me is worth it. My opinion only.

I don't have any pain from adhesions (knock on wood) but I know every time I have to have my abdomen opened up, it takes a lot longer because of the scar tissue...I think walking immediately after surgery is another way to help prevent them from getting too bad, but depends on each person's body since we are all different...

don't know why they don't inform patients about it either. but the surgoens i asked reacted so positively about it, so i feel it's a good thing.. at least i hope so.

Hello 2b ColonFree! I actually read an entire article about Sepra film and adept, it was praised for how wonderful is works with avoiding adhesions! Do you have to purchase it and then give it to the surgeon or will they order it for your surgery? Just wondering in case I ever have anymore surgery in the future.

OHIO76 that is interesting what you said about the walking after surgery, it would actually make sense. I would be out of luck though, I couldn't get up and walk for about 5-6 days after my surgery! I did read a lot about it and they said that a lot of people never have any issues with them but others do and they don't know why. It's frustrating that they don't have anymore information behind that. Hopefully most of us don't ever have any type of issues with them (crossing my fingers)!!!!!!

well, i don't have to purchase it myself, i have to tell my surgeon and the hospital will order it for me. i live in Israel and that's how it works here. it's very expensive, but i think it's worth it.

i hope you don't have to have any additional surgeries in the future.

I will have to have my rectum remove in probably the next 6 years because I am planning on keeping my ileostomy. So just one more surgery hopefully and not to mention if I have anymore kids I'll have to have c-sections because I have had one so far. But I will mention to my surgeon and OBGYN about sepra film and adept, they sound great!!! Anything to keep those adhesions away, lol!

Israel looks like such a beautiful country! My husbands family lives in Greece and we were thinking about going to Israel this year after we left the island. Have you lived there all of your life if you don't mind me asking?
