Answer to weird stoma issue- ileostomy newbies for you too

I saw the stoma nurse today about the weird way my stoma was separating from the skin and the bottom.
Well - she said that the inner stitches dissolved before the skin had time to heal. The reason that the skin didn't have time to heal was because of the long term prednisone use.

That makes sense.... my pred. is impeding the skin to heal as quickly as usual.


So I have to use stoma powder in the crevices and skin barrier to seal it and then proceed with the changing of the bag.
She said that in 2 weeks ( by then I will be off of the pred) it should be healed.

I feel so much better because it isn't infected or bleeding or anything really bad.

You are going to feel so much better in all respects once that prednisone is out of your system! It's a great feeling.

Glad to hear that things are under control and that it wasn't anything too serious.

Hi Jackie, just curious how much pred were you on when you went in for op? I have mine next week, but I have managed to taper down to 2.5mg. Glad that things are getting better for you. x

I was on 30 mg. and then at the hospital prior to surgery they upped it ( apparently this is procedure). I am down to 20 now and going to 15 mg by tomorrow.

I can't wait. Then I will only be taking my Synthroid, Lexapro, and protonix-- wow three pills. I used to take up to 20 pills a day.

Thats going to one of the great things eventually no more drugs for the uc. Bet you can't wait to get of that pred. Take care x
