? about my ng tube from my 14 year old babygirl..help me answer her PLEASE

This is probably the silliest ? I have asked thus far since my surgery....I had surgery on jan 7 to remove a cyst in which my surgeon knicked my colon during this very simple procedure....anywho,.....5 days later i had emergency colostomy surgery where I had paritinus and 5 days of backup bile in my abdomen.....In August, I am going to have my reversal surgery....my daughter who challenges me everyday with her ?s, asked...., shes 14 and an honor student ...anyway....SHe asked if i would have the tube up my nose in august when i have my reversal....and I really didnt know how to answer that...I thought I had read on the forum that I would.....She told me that was the hardest thing for her was 2 see me with the ng tube....She said, and i didnt realize this at all, that brown liquid ran out the tube.....I know i had drains around my lungs and pancreas...adn had another abcess deep in my abdomen wall which they couldnt insert a drain without puting me to sleep.....Anyway the ? she ask.....Mom was that brown stuff poop coming from your stomach....What is the best answer to give her....I really dont know the answer.....I know i had alot of bile in my system...PLEASE SOMEONE help i feel rather stupid at the moment....kim /Maggie

I don't think there is anyway to predict whether or not you will have an Ng tube for your second surgery.  I didn't have one for either of my surgeries but patients on my floor who had the same surgery as I had the Ng tube.  Go figure.

Thanks so much for your answers....the inquizitive 14 year old still wonders...lol...im just glad she is so interested in my recovery....She always has questions....and im proud of her....kim  Ps. an honor student and winner of the science fair and the community award winner....goes to opryland hotel in two weeks to compete...and I missed january and february of her activites...but life will be what it is meant to be....I pray for a good reversal...however if god wants me to have my sidekick i call her precious....(my bag) then i will have it.....Im lucky to be around to see my daughter grow up and acheive her goals in life.......THANKS AGAIN FELLOW FORUM MEMBERS>>>>U ALL ARE GREAT>>>>>

I had an NG tube placed after 2 of my 3 surgeries (a few days afterwards), for about a day each. Yes, they are your stomach juices and anything else left in the digestive tract before surgery. Anytime they operate or touch your intestines, they go to sleep, and can stop working temporarily called an ileus. If this happens, basically you have a traffic jam in your intestines and everything backs up to your stomach. Your stomach doesn't like this stuff in it and makes you vomit it out. If you vomit, you risk the chance of this stuff getting into your lungs and causing an infection. To prevent this, they stick an NG tube up your nose and into your stomach to suck this stuff out. It was not a pleasant experience. If your intestines wake up quickly and you don't go to solid foods too fast, you should be able to avoid the NG tube all together after surgery.
