oh you poor thing, hang in there, but if you start feeling weird then maybe you should call your dr's office, maybe they can suggest something, maybe ensure plus can help?
i hope you can survive till friday, you're in my prayers!!

Thanks :) Its Thursday and all i want right now is a vat of spaghetti and a gigantic bag of doritos.
I think the prep i did Sunday is finally starting to work its way through my system though... and the magnesium citrate tastes like jolly ranchers. haha.

are you still feeling o.k? is your test early in the morning? i hope it is, so you can get it over with already..... i really feel for you, girl, hang in there, in a few hrs you go to sleep and then the day of the test!!!! YAY!!!!
seriously, the fact that the prep didn't work should be alerting for colonic inertia.

Well my test went well... He didn't find anything that he thought would be alarming, like a blockage or anything. So there's no physical reason for my constipation. I'm supposed to call his office next week to set up a followup and hopefully I don't get the "well, there's nothing wrong with you" talk. Because if I do I'll scream.

i'm so glad it's all over already, such awful 4 days being on liqiuds only!! well, just as i have suspected, it's most likely your constipation is idiopathic, which means no obvious reason, but a non functioning colon. my guess he'll probably order you some functional tests, like manometry, defecography and zits marker tests.

Well I'm supposed to call his office this week. I don't remember much of what he said, but according to the family member with me he is definitely sure somethings up, he's just not exactly sure what it could be. I'm supposed to go do some upper GI xrays (Yay. I get to drink more crap!) but other then that I'm not sure what else is in store for me. The good thing is that I've finally found someone who believes me.

I had my anorectal monometry this am.  It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.  I really really don't want to have the defecogram.  I don't know why that one scares me so.  After that I should be scheduled for my colectomy.  I am so ready to get back to a normal life style.  We have stopped going out for dinner because of the horrible cramping.  I know this isn't new to anyone, it just feels so good to say it when people understand what I am talking about.

hi conmarjo, you can talk about it here as much as you wish, that's what this forum is for.

about the defecography, well it's not pleasant, but you can do it. just make sure you drink lots of water after it's done so the barium doesn't dry you too much - VERY IMPORTANT! if you'll drink enough water after the test and take a laxative to clean you out from the barium, then you'll be o.k.

you have to do it, your drs have to know the rectum is o.k.

Help. I am miserable.  My constipation has been horrible this week (as usual).  I used an enema before my monometry test on Thur.  That didn't give me any relief.  I drank a large glass of trilyte and took a dulcolax thinking I would have some relief.  None.  I was miserable at work and called the surgeons office.  They ordered golytely.  I drank that last night.  All I had was horrible cramping.  This morning I drank more and took some lactulose and yea I finally went.  I missed my step-daughters collage graduation.  I have the defecogram Thur. and then will talk to the surgeon about scheduling my surgery.  I don't know how much longer I can hold on.  It's so hard to work when your belly hurts.  I have lost 20#.  I am hungry but know I will cramp if I eat.  I know I am getting to the end of this, but the last few days have really been bad.  Thanks for listening.

hang in there, i know so well how you feel, i drank this stuff w/ no results too, i thought i was going to die.
i'm glad you finally had some relief though. not much longer for you, you're on your way to the solution and hopefully to a better life. thinking of you.

Yea!  I had the defecogram this morning.  I am so glad I am done with that.  It wasn't as bad as I expected.  I really think the monometry was worse.  I have a rectocele along with the colonic inertia and adhesions.  I have an appt. with the surgeon on Tues.  I feel I am coming to an end with this.  Again thanks for letting me sound off.  It really does help.

WOO HOO!!! congrants!!! so it wasn't so bad after all, i'm glad you did it, it's very important to know that you have a rectocele. but why do you have adhesions? did you have surgery in you pelvic before?

so this is it? you're meeting w/ the surgeon to plan your surgery? this is so exciting, i really wish you the best outcome and never have to deal w/ this dang C prob.

i'm happy i could help as much as i could, pls keep me posted on what happens w/ u.

I have had 4 abdominal surgeries.  Adhesions have been an issue for me before.  Has anyone else had a rectocele along with the colonic inertia?

well as a matter of fact, most ppl (usually women) w/ CI develope either a rectocele or a rectal prolapse or even a combination of both. in most cases it is accompanized w/ anismus too. it happens due to all of the years we spend being constipated and bearing down.

did the surgeries you had were due to intestinal probs?

the best advice i can give you right now is to ask your surgeon to order you "adept" or "sepra film" - these 2 suctances are used by the surgeon at the end of the surgery for the prevention of ashesions. i think it's very important for you to minimize as much as possible the adhesions building up again.

Hi Conmarjo,

I had surgery for colon inertia 8 weeks ago.  I know you'll be so happy when you have this surgery.  I also have a rectocele, at first the surgeon wanted to repair it first, but after all my tests he decided I should have surgery for colon inertia first, and he could always repair the rectocele later.   What did your doctor say about the rectocele?

I was told I have the rectocele by the radiologist when I had my defecogram yesterday.  I see my surgeon on Tuesday.  I hope they can repair both at the same time.  Maybe not.  How have you had to modify your diet?  How many BM's are you having a day?  How long were you in the hospital?  Off work?  I am so ready to have the procedure, just have so many questions.  Thanks in advance for your answers.

my surgeon told me they dont do a colectomy and fix the rectocele at the same time, but i don't know about your dr.

If you have both colonic inertia and a rectocele, which one is repaired first?  I don't want to miss anymore work than I need to.  I am going to a colon/rectal surgeon.  I hope when I see him tomorrow he'll tell me he can do both.

I just returned from my appt. with the surgeon.  My total colectomy has been scheduled for 5/27.  I hate to go through this surgery but I am so ready for relief.  Please pray for me and let me know of any good tips you  have for recovery.  My sweet husband plans to spend every night with me.

I have a question for all y'all whose had a subtotal colectomy. I had mine done april 2nd, and I'm not running to the bathroom a lot (as in 3 plus bms a day)... maybe once or twice a day....mainly once a day. (All the food does come out) But there's been those couple times, like today, where I haven't been able to go for 2 days and I am in so much pain! I was once able to hold 10days of food before surg and now if I don't go to the bathroom daily, I get in that same amount of pain I once had.

My question is....should I worry that things are slow? I'm under the impression that I should be having multiple bms for awhile. I stopped having multiple bms 2 weeks after surgery. I am 24 so I could be bouncing back quicker, I did go back to work after 2 1/2 Weeks.. could it be my diet? Not enough water? I think I'm just worried I'm operating slow and my small intestine is failing (I was told my small bowel emptying study came back slow)

good luck conmarjo!! i'm really happy for you. you know, i've just heard a couple of days ago of someone who had a colectomy AND a rectocele repair at the same time.. and i was thinking how odd it was that i'd hear about this, just at the same time when you were asking about this.. is that a WOW or what!! so what about you is your surgeon going to repair the rectocele at the same time?

anyway, i hope everything goes super well and you can come out of it into a whole new healthy life. best wishes to you!!

I will not be having the rectocele repaired.  He said it wasn't big enough to cause a problem.  Yea!  I had my preop today,  it all sounds so scary.  I have terrible veins so they will be putting a line under my clavical.  Ouch.  My wonderful husband will stay at my side, as will the good Lord.  I let you know how I do.  Thanks for all your replys.  Conmarjo

 I am new to this forum and newly dx with colonic inertia (CI) (5.29.09). I'm currently taking Amitiza twice a day and drinking Miralax. Still not much success with BMs. I am considering having a total abdominal colectomy. My surgeon is giving me six weeks to think about it. So I am researching 24/7. My next appointment is on July 10th so I want to know everything there is to know about CI. I have been reading several of these post and have found lots of useful information. I'm guessing that CI is managable through medications and the only sure treatment is to remove the colon. Is that right?

welcome to HW! this board is a great source of support and information. i encourage you to google "total colectomy part 3" (parts 1 and 2 are hard to find) and then part 4 and so on, you'll get LOTS of information there about CI and about how life is post op. there are lots of positive stories there!
i wish you the best of luck with your dicision and a successful surgery. keep us posted.
