one inch of colon causing me grief!

i have 1" left of colon and it's driving me nuts. i don't want to get it removed right now (prob. in 1-2 years), mostly because i cannot take time off work to get the surgery. it's pretty inflamed. Also, i keep getting UTI's - is this related somehow? last CT scan showed an "area of fluid" above the 1". the ER doctor didn't seem to concerned about it. been on antibiotics several times and when i get off, my bladder/UTI infection pain returns. i have mucus/blood discharge about 10 times a day from the rectum. makes me wonder if i am just one of those people who cannot handle ANY amount of colon? Has anyone had something similar?? why do i keep having bladder pain? the doctor keeps giving me antibiotics.


i am happy with my stoma and DO NOT want this to change during rectum removal surgery. but i heard it's possible they may need to re-open my midline incision in order to remove the rectum if they cannot remove it all from the backside??? please help. thanks.

Yes, it's true that even leaving 1inch of rectum can cause you major grief. You can continue to treat the area with UC drugs to keep the grief down but you're not going to get full relief until you get that removed. For all those who think you can have partial surgery for UC this is a reminder that it doesn't work (not that you are included in that group but I get a fair amount of questions as to why UCers can't just have a resection in lieu of a total proctocolectomy). I'm not sure what your next surgery entails but you can ask people at www.j-pouch.org

 I have about one inch of anus/rectum, too. The stump bleeds and drains like you said yours does. My surgeon said he would take it out with surgery.Then he changed his mind and prescribed cream just like I used to use when I had the whole colon.And I am such a baby because I just can't hack another cuttin right now.  Hope you can find some relief from your grief.

do you or anyone have any bladder issues related to your rectum or surgery?  i don't know if it's pelvic dysfunction, infections, or what....

nene205:  what cream did your doctor prescribe?

Hey Jen,
The doctor prescribed Analpram HC. Whenever the little bugger starts bleeding , I put some of this cream on it and helps. But the drainage is always there---bother! I just put a gauge sponge in underware and keep on going. I have learned to live with the grief. I do have a lot of bladder infections but I had that before surgery. Hope you get some relief fast.
