update on my 4yr old Daughter

We saw her Doctor on the 24th and he said he will try the reveasal after 6 weeks, so that means we see him again on Aug 27th and they will do a ultra sound to see if the hole in her bowl is closed.

Also we tryed a new bag and she is allargic to it.  She has red rash under the wafer and so we are trying to get it to stop itching.  We can not use the convatec bag at all.  So, we are still on the hunt for a bag that last for more then six hours.  Thanks you all, we were able to find little tricks that help the wafers stay on a little longer then four hours...we are getting closer.

So here is a new questions, what should i do for the red itchy bumps?  I did call the doc. he gave her a gel that drys, but the bag is not sticking well.

When I had my ostomy, I had numerous skin problems. It seems that your doctor has seen the bumps, is that correct? My doctor could never quite figure out what my irritation was from. Initially he thought it was a yeast infection and prescribed me nystatin powder (since you said her problem is an allergy I assume she will not be using this though, but if it turns out that she does, I found the best thing to do was to apply a thin layer of powder and then apply a good layer of skin prep (I used a non-sting swab type). I would then use a blow dryer on cool to get it really dry before applying the bag.)

As for the gel, I also was prescribed a steriod one (I don't know what type your daughter is using). Once again, my method of application was to put on a layer (I tried not to put on too much gel since it can sometimes be a challege to get it dry). I would then use the cool setting of the blow dryer to fully dry the area. Next, I would apply the skin prep, blow it dry, and finally I would put on the bag. At times I would even use my powder on bumpy, weeping areas of my skin and the gel on the other.

Since your daughter's problem is an allergy, I'm not sure if any of this information will help or not. I do remember from your previous posts that bag size was an issue. Though I don't know if they make all types of sizes, when the doctors were confused as to why my skin would not heal, they recommended New Hope bags. Apparently they are good for people with allergies and are made of a different material. I never got them, but maybe you could look into it. There is also a compamy called Cymed that makes bags with a different type material. It didn't work for me but maybe it would for your daughter. According to their website cymedostomy.com, they have pediatric sizes.

Oh, and though I definitely wasn't as active as your daughter is, I was able to keep my bags on for about 36 hours on average. The biggest thing is to keep trying until you find what works. It can get frustrating, but I think you should be able to figure it out with time. Good luck!

Have you tried to use convex wafers. I don't have a recessed stoma, but someone suggested them to me, and I hardly ever leak and the wafers last much longer.
Also, i've tried lots and lots of companies (i didn't think cymed were very good at all), and i think coloplast make the best quality. they seem to last the longest. (4-6 days) I can swim in them and they still don't leak. (but swimming does make them itchy)
I really like the look of hollister new image, but i can never get them to stay on very long (2-3 days)
I don't know if you are using one or two pieces, but two pieces are designed to stay on longer and you can just change the bag out and leave the wafer on.

For the itchy red bumps: does she bathe (shower) without an appliance ever? That seems to help me when I get tichy red bumps. Then I lay down after without an appliance, and just let the skin around ostomy have air time. While i watch tv, i just have a roll of toilet paper with me to catch the poo and lay on a towel or bed pad. It really helps. I usually do this right b4 bed, b/c that's the slowest output time for me.

P.s. - i don't use ANY skin prep at all! I think they decrease the wear time and for the coloplast, so does using heat. The appliances are designed to melt with body heat and anything warmer can harm the integrity of the glue. I used to use all that stuff, but found the less, the better. Esp. since i have sensitive skin. I use the midi size bags (smaller)
