Hello everyone ! Its been awhile since I have been here. things are going great but I have a question.
i have my rectum in tact and has had my entire large intestine removed.
Okay here we go....
I am going to see the surgeon September 18th to see if I can be reconnected, i have had stella the stoma for 3 years and I would really like to know if I would be a candidate for the j-pouch and is that the only type you can have?
I was afraid and very confused about what had happened to me at the time of the surgery and felt as though I had nowhere to turn.
Anyways I lost my large intestine from a blockage abcess and obstruction due to crohns and uc......
Can anyone give me advice and the types of questions to ask the surgeon?

unfortunately Crohn's diminishes our chances for a lot of things BUT it does also depend on where you have it in your digestive track...Some doc's will try a j-pouch on a Crohn's patient IF they have NEVER had any small intestine involvement. It takes a true specialist at a major hospital to have tried it and have been successful for both the surgery and knowing who is a candidate.

K-pouch is another type and is seen more with Crohn's patients. It's internal, but a catheter is used to drain.

Is your surgeon at a teaching hospital?

Well i am not sure if he is at a teaching hospital , but he is by far the best surgeon for this type of proceedure.
As for the crohn's i only had it in the large intestine, but I do look forward to knowing if indeed I am a candidate or not.
I am not putting all my eggs in one basket because I don't want to get my hopes up just in case.
It doesn't hurt to ask though, cross your fingers, i will see him next month on the 18th , I will keep you informed.
