Is the ostomy supposed to hurt?

My ostomy hurts at times, not all the time but sometimes.  I don't know if it is the ostomy or what is coming out of the ileo.  Do any of you have this?  Also, I have rectal pressure, it feels like I need to have a BM.  I had the ileo done in June due to UC.  I didn't have UC for years like other may have mine was a result of c-diff.  Anyone who can help would be appreciated.  Thanks

what do you mean by hurt? does the area around it hurt? or does it feel like a pulling sensation?

As for feelinglike you need to go, thats normal, it will lessen over time. I found that if get where i ahve to pee really bad, that happens.

My home care nurse mentioned that there should be "no feeling" on the actual stoma so I don't think it should hurt. Maybe the hole around it on your wafer is not large enough and is causing pressure?? I also have the "urge" to have a BM quite often- I am 3 weeks post ileostomy. My doctor said this is completely normal. Try sitting on the toilet, you might have a mucousy discharge (oil like) which is normal.

hey i had my part one jpouch surg on sept 11, and yes! my stoma hurts, i told the dr and he said it might just be the muscles that are sore around it, i know wat u mean, sometimes its just perfect and i feel great and other times its just so sore i dont wanna move the bag at all.. i did notice when i eat a big meal and dont drink enough and the stool is kinda hard it hurts..if u find out what it is, lemme know

I think the stoma hurts sometimes and I know I can tell the difference between the stoma hurting and the tissue around the stoma hurting. Right now they both hurt because I can't seem to get the wafers to stay on. My skin around the stoma is really red and mad looking.
The WOCN changed the wafer to a convatec conves wafer and it goes on great and as long as I push it in the stoma stick up like it should but when I let loose it goes back to the way it was. I'm picking up an eakin seal this afternoon and I'll try it maybe something will hold. I know I'm tired of washing sheets and being in a mess!!! I see the WOCN on Monday and I'm hoping she'll work some majic on me so I'll be able to wear a wafer longer than 12-24 hours. Cathy

go to a medical supply store, or someplace like babies are us, and get some waterproof pads to sleep on. I took the one home from the hosptial and sewed sheets on to them, so they are soft, and i sleep on one everynight, that way, if i have a leak, i dont have to change thebed, just me and the pad!
And i use the ones i got from babies are us, cause theya re smaller to lay on the floor when i change my bag, that way it doesnt get on the floor!

Thanks summer that is an excellent idea. I do sleep on a towel but sometimes it soaks through. I'm hoping using the correct wafer for a convex stoma and an eakin seal will relieve me some so I'm not having a daily leak and change. I also had gastric bypass in 2002 so I used to weigh nearly 400#'s and now I weigh 110# so the extra skin doesn't help either. I need a full body lift but the thought of another surgery is not on my mind and my insurance wouldn't pay for it anyway except now it may be a medical necessity. Cathy

Im new to here. have pain on illeostomy also. have to use protective barrier powder around stoma twice a day. helps with the pain but can't seem to cure the tissue irritation, any more ideas will be helpful. thx

29 years old. uc/cd in 1988. illeostomy in 1994 and 1996. burst bowel in 1996. stoma relocted to other side of body in 2000. been there, done that

are you leaking twice a day? Im just wondering why you are changing that much.

My pain was from having to replace the wafer so often Machracing36 I've kind of gotten that straightened out and haven't had as much trouble. I think having to clean around the stoma and taking things off and on irritated it to the point of it letting me know it wasn't okay for me to play with it that much. My skin around stayed fairly healthy during all of that only a little break down to where I needed powder.
Are you getting the excess powder off? Sometimes the wafer doesn't want to stick as well as it should if there is too much powder!!
