I had my ileostomy 7 years ago after suffering UC for years , I am now due to have my rectal stump removed this summer sad I am so nervous about it now as its getting closer got so many question to ask like will I have to go in days before surgery for prep ? will I be in ITU for days after surgery like I was after my Ileostomy ( I was on high dose steroids then though ) and what about recovery time after how long does it usually take the bottom area to start to feel better blush I know my surgeon will have all these answers but its great to hear off others who have been through it wink

Hi craftylass and welcome!

I was nervous about having my rectum removed, too, and was surprised by how easy it was. I did not have to go into ICU after surgery and was in a regular room for only 4 days before going home. I was able to sit without very little pain and even started driving two weeks later! :-)

My surgeon left the 'butt wound' open, so it could heal from the inside out. I packed it twice a day with saline filled gauze, which kept it from getting infected. It took a few months for it to completely heal up, but it didn't hurt, so I was able to go back to work after 6 weeks. I'm a church secretary, so I spend a lot of time sitting and working on the computer, and it didn't hurt to sit all day.

I had my rectum removed when I had my surgery to get my ileo. I was in the hospital 4 days. I was in horrible shape when I went in, went in a few hrs before my surgery, and wasn't in ICU at all. Mine wasn't done like Cecilias was. He just sewed it up and that was that. I'm sure you'll be a little uncomfortable afterwards--I was, but it wasn't like unbearable or anything. And you'll be able to lay on your stomach to relieve pressure--I couldn't cuz I'd just gotten my ileo! But I was driving probably a week after, and stitting quite comfortably maybe 2 or 3 weeks after. I just sort of sat with my weight on one cheek for the first 2 weeks or so. :) But it's really not too bad. Just uncomfortable.

I'm not sure this will be of help as I had the remainder of my colon and rectum removed in Jan 2010 due to ca discovered in colo-rectum. They created a K-pouch at that time and removed my J-pouch-in place for the past 16 years.
My recovery was fairly complicated, but that was because there was ca & a pouch to be removed and another pouch to be created. My rectum was sewn shut-it felt "tight" as it healed, but once stitches "melted" the skin relaxed & now area is perfectly comfortable. THat part of me healed pretty fast.

I wish you luck and hope all goes smoothly. In reading so many msgs on this site, I am struck by how very resilient we are. Hang in there. Trish

winni: you had desolving stitches - I'm so jealous - I had staples all the way up my rear - NOT comfortable to sit with or when they took them out.
