Well, I passed that Barium Enema test. It was the 2nd time I had to go for it since my jpouch was leaking. Well, I got the green light, and set the date for the surgery in 3 weeks. I am so friggin happy it is unbelievable. My surgeon is awesome. He was like I will be expecting emails from you. I had to laugh and told him I am sure he is going to be happy when I am done questioning him ... he was like ... I am actually going to miss it. I can't believe I got this far!! I am just excited because me being a fireman will start all over again. Man, this is a good feeling. Thank you all for the help and support. For those of you that have gone for this procedure I am sure I you will be beckoned upon for answers ... no doubt! Have a great weekend all.

Anthony,
This is terrific news but I want to temper your excitement because you may find that the adaption period is choppy. There will be ups and downs as your new plumbing gets used to it's new job. Certainly it will be better than having UC but don't be surprised to get frustrated along the way. Be patient and remember that improvements will come in increments measured in weeks, not days.

Can I just ask you what it was like at least the 1st month after the surgery? pain-wise, bathroom visits, etc? Thank you, Sue!!

Sounds good to me. I won't have access to a computer while in the hospital but I won't be admitted till the day of surgery. NOW some of my friends are asking me why I didn't have a second opinion on whether I needed this surgery or not...ugh. I don't believe the surgeon would operate if he didn't feel I absolutely was a candidate for surgery. Prednisone dependency, chronic ulcerations in my rectum, history (paternal grandmother) of rectal cancer.... these are enough reasons. Sad that I have to say goodbye to the rest of the colon though.

Christine,
Most of us who had surgery for UC DID not get a 2nd opinion. You are very hard headed!!!
Anthony, No pain after 2nd surgery. Frequency for me was about
15X per day in the first few weeks; keep a food log, stay away from sugar if your frequency is high; take fiber and imodium.

Thank you, Sue ... was urgency a huge issue. I can deal with 15x+ since I was already going about
20-25x per day. I just couldn't deal with the urgency and pain and started to have many accidents.

No, there will be no urgency!! If so in the first few days it might feel like you gotta go but it's not like that UC gotta-go sensation.

I'm glad there will be no urgency. I remember during my last flare up I had never had an accident. I had some close calls, mostly when I was driving, so I had to bite down on something to ignore the pain from the urgency.
Then 3 days before the surgery I dropped my fiancee off at work and the urgency hit...I told her that I was going to go use the restroom inside, but it was kinda hard to run cause you have to do that weird running/walking thing where people think you have some mental problem lol...but yea I made it halfway to the front door and couldn't hold it anymore.
All I remember thinking was, after surgery this will never happen again.

That's awesome news, Anthony! It seems like you just had your first surgery a couple of weeks ago. You lucky dog! I go for #2 of three surgeries in mid-September. Yes, I'm jealous but I'm happy for you. Good luck!

Thanks again, Sue. Scrap Girl, the time went by very very quickly. It does still feel like it was only a few weeks ago. Before you know it, yours will be all over with as well. Shiny, yeah, bro ... many times I laid down the law at the front door, car seat, just standing thee waiting to get popcorn at the movies. It was horrible. The bag has saved me that embarrasment as well as the extreme urgency so I am greatful for that.

anthony, i successfully went through the two j-pouch surgeries in december and february so if you have any questions just shoot them my way. my email address is in my profile.
but yea, for the first week to two weeks you may have a kinda uncomfortable sensation in your j-pouch when stool passes into it, which is completely normal. it's a pressure sensation and makes you want to go even though you don't have to... i think some people refer to it as a j-pouch spasm. these sensations went away for me after 10 days.
post-op pain wasn't an issue for me after a week or so... it really subsides quickly after that.
