anyone have rectum removed?

Hi I am finding that most of you still have your rectums and I was wondering if anyone has had theirs removed.  I am looking for info on that whole aspect of the ileostomy.  Am I in the right place to find these people?  If not, can you tell me where I might find info on this?

great to see you in a different forum!!! Well i had most of my rectum removed, but they left a little, i think its called a cuff, to improve the chances for continence. I have talked to another woman, in her late thirties, who had her entire rectum removed, which may increase the chances for incontinence, but they have exercises, called Kegels, to build muscle and improve your chances for continence with this too. Both procedures are done pretty commonly, as far as my surgeon explained to me...

I just wanted to let you know you are not alone!!I had my rectum removed in July 2004. It is still new to me, but maybe I can help?

are you going to go for a j pouch?
Or is it a permanent ileostomy?

It is a permanent illeostomy.Before I got this one I tried a temp, had it reversed, then it did'nt work so I got a permanent.

I had my entire colon, rectum and anus removed so no exit strategy left. I've been in remission since then and though I sometimes wonder if they could have done something different I know that is history and I am just still learning to live with the bag. I'm finally wearing other than overalls which I thought was the only thing I could wear. I hope to start excercizing again (no more excuses). I can go up to 7-8 days without changing the bag so it doesn't seem like too much of an inconvience.

howdy!  I just found this site.  You get seven days out of a pouch, man you are so lucky.  I get three sometimes four.  When they created my stoma my skin sagged to the point that I have dips around it.  In fact, one area is like a small canal that points right to where they operated.  I don't know whether it was because stitches and staples never held me together or what, but my skin is not even.  It took me two years of trying things different things to finally get a method that works.  Mind you I have to stay laid down for an hour (putting it on at night is the best) but I seem to get a decent seal and I do have to use lots of paste.  Of course the paste has created some problems of their own but that is another story.  The good thing is I have been pain free for ten years and I have just joined weight watcher because I have gained a shade to much weight. 

  I too have had my anus removed and don't really miss it.

I to have had everything removed. Mine was in July and I still am having a hard time! I am not working so that has helped a bit, but sometimes are more emotional than others. I have always been the strong one of my family, now I have been forced to not only look at my physical problems but also to rely on others for help. This has been very difficult. Oh yes but I am alive..... lol how many times have we heard that?

I know its true!!!!

Hi,

I had my rectum removed when I had my colon taken out due to UC in March '03.  I was very lucky; though I was on steroids up until about a month prior to my operation, I still healed up incredibly well. 

Sometimes, I don't know how to describe what I had done to others, so to put it bluntly, I had my backside sewn shut!  Because I had recently been on steroids, they used the big, strong sutures to close me; I realize this has much to do with the patient's state of health as well as surgeon's preference (some surgeons use sutures underneath the skin that dissolve.) 

The feeling was very different than what I was used to with UC; I did not feel sick at all, though the sutures were uncomfortable.  My skin was pretty irritated, but when they took them out 2 weeks after the operation, I was good to go.  This was all nearly 2 years ago, and I have been incredibly lucky- no problems since.  I have been working full-time and have not encountered any physical limitation.  I'd be lying if I said I was compeletly comfortable telling guys I date about this, but other than that, I'm very happy with the results of my operation and would do it over again if I had the choice.
