Ileostomy: Is it normal to have a BM through your rectum?

I am a health care worker and have a question as I did not cover this in school. I had a patient who had an ileostomy and had a medium-sized soft BM in his brief. I immediately told the nurse on duty but was wondering if this was normal? I had to leave shortly after so I didn't really get an answer. Thanks to all who respond.

Yes, this is normal. I'm assuming your patient has a temp ostomy? The intestine, in a temp ostomy, is cut halfway through. Half the intestine sticks out to form an ostomy, the other half hangs down and connects to either the large intestine, or jpouch, whichever is the case.

If the patient's ostomy were permanent this would not happen. Chances are your patient's ostomy will be reveresed at some point.
