protective of your ostomy?

Is anyone else like this? Sometimes I am paranoid that somethings going to happen. If I rough house with people(not often) or when I lift something or even when I am around the dog I always sheild that area. I am afraid someone is going to hit it or the dog is going to step on it(70lbs and tries to climb on me).

It's just kinda hard worrying about something happening to it all the time. I have this fear that I am going to get in some kind of fight one day having to protect myself and getting puched there.

i try to make sure noone hits it, and that the stupid cat doesnt jump on it ( icant stand that cat!) or that my son doesnt hit me in that area, but i dont let it bother me too much. If i see the cat coming, i put my hand over it, if my kid goes towards the area i do the same thing, but i dont NOT do things because im afraid it will get hurt. Does that make sense?

and hey if you get in a fight, pull the thing off and fling it at the other guy! i bet youll win :D

Brian,

I am totally the same way; you are NOT alone in your fears/sensible approach to protecting that area. I think we've all been through so much we don't want to have more issues that are quite avoidable.

Love summers last comment though :-) I went on a world cruise and people were saying "Aren't you afraid of pirates off the Somalia Coast?" I said, "So NOT compared to what I've been through" I said, "If those pirates hassle me, I'll just take off my bag and wing it at them, they would faint dead away."

I think what summer is saying is, continue to sensibly protect, but try not to worry. That's what I'm working toward too.

I know, nothing much scares me after what I went through and how I ended up with the stoma. As long as it keeps working that's all I care. I have MET the pirates in my life already. Rosemary

Summerstorm- I do the exact same thing. Like when I am playing fetch with the 70lb german shepherd.. if I am sitting on the couch and I don't throw the ball right away she tries to climb on me to make sure i'm going to throw it.
Or like this one guy I just met was like what's up man and gave me a little "friendly" punch in the stomach. about 4 inches from it.

Oh Lord Brian,

That little friendly punch could have spelled big trouble for you. I just tell my friends; I don't keep it a secret. My cat is very sweet and is elderly, but when she is on my lap I have to sort of hold my hand over my stoma and kind of guide her toward my left side as she wants to totally snuggle. (I cannot even wrap my head around how people are "intimate" with this kind of thing. I have lots of friends and am social, but frankly I'm glad I don't need to deal with the whole intimacy thing.)

i just put a belly band around it to hold it up and out of the way so i can, um, do things :D

I've had my ileostomy since July 2007 and do not worry about the cats jumping on me while in bed or laying on the couch. I have two declawed cats that are wonderful. I used to be "very" protective of my stoma, but don't worry too much anymore. My one cat loves to "knead" my tummy, but he doesn't bother that area. My brother's dog, which is a Mastiff (sp?) thinks my ostomy is my rear-end so he loves to come right up to it and sniff it. Gross!
